Southampton Triumphs Over West Brom as Armstrong Shines
Adam Armstrong scored twice to propel Southampton to within a point of the Championship play-offs, increasing the pressure on West Bromwich Albion manager Ryan Mason.
Leo Scienza opened the scoring for the Saints before Armstrong netted a first-half double, bringing his tally to seven goals in six matches.
West Brom fought back in the second half, with Karlan Grant and Nat Phillips finding the net, setting the stage for a thrilling finish. However, the Baggies succumbed to their seventh consecutive away defeat.
Tonda Eckert, who has taken charge of Southampton, has now secured six victories in seven matches since replacing Will Still, rapidly guiding the team up the league table.
Under Eckert’s leadership, Southampton has scored 21 goals, a significant improvement compared to the 13 goals managed during Still's 13 league games at the helm.
Meanwhile, West Brom languishes in 16th place, having won only two of their last ten matches, prompting renewed scrutiny regarding Mason's progress since his appointment in the summer.
Tom Fellows, a West Brom academy graduate, showcased what his former club is missing since his £10 million transfer to Southampton, as he assisted the opening goal. Fellows sprinted nearly the length of the pitch before setting up Scienza, who expertly finished into the far corner.
Despite Southampton's fluid play, West Brom contributed to their own downfall, gifting the Saints a second goal when Callum Styles' back pass was intercepted by Armstrong, who scored his first of the night.
West Brom goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith also erred, giving the ball away to Caspar Jander, who shot over the bar. Southampton then increased their lead after intense pressing, with Taylor Harwood-Bellis capitalizing on a misplaced pass to find Finn Azaz, who assisted Armstrong for a neat finish into the far corner.
In the second half, West Brom turned the tide, with Grant scoring his first goal of the season with a left-footed shot. The Baggies continued to press, and Isaac Price had a couple of attempts before Phillips headed home from close range with four minutes remaining, setting up a dramatic finish.
Samuel Iling-Junior nearly equalized in stoppage time but shot wide, leaving West Brom to rue missed opportunities.
