Spain Secures 2026 World Cup Qualification After Draw with Turkey
Spain has secured automatic qualification for the 2026 World Cup following a draw with Turkey in Seville.
Under the management of Luis de la Fuente, Spain finished at the top of Group E, winning five out of their six qualifying matches while maintaining a clean sheet.
La Roja appeared poised to extend their perfect record when Dani Olmo netted his 12th international goal, capitalizing on a cut-back from Marc Cucurella just four minutes into the match.
However, Spain conceded their first goal of the campaign when Deniz Gul equalized, guiding the ball past goalkeeper Unai Simon just three minutes before halftime.
Turkey took the lead in the 54th minute, with Salih Ozcan striking a powerful shot into the bottom left corner, putting Spain's impressive 30-match unbeaten streak in competitive internationals at risk.
In response, Mikel Oyarzabal, in fine form, equalized for Spain eight minutes later, scoring from close range after Yeremy Pino's initial effort was cleared off the line. This marked Oyarzabal's sixth goal in the qualification campaign.
Turkey, sitting in second place, needed to win by a seven-goal margin to deny Spain the top spot. Despite their spirited performance, they were unable to overcome the European champions.
Olmo had opportunities to extend Spain's lead in the first half but was thwarted by two impressive saves from Manchester United's goalkeeper Altay Bayindir. Additionally, Baris Yilmaz's acrobatic overhead kick forced a remarkable save from Simon, keeping the match finely balanced at 1-1.
This result means that only England will finish the European World Cup qualifiers without conceding a goal.
