Steven Gerrard in Talks for Possible Return to Rangers
Steven Gerrard has been the focal point of discussions following the sacking of Russell Martin by Rangers on Sunday. The former head coach is set to meet with the club's owners to discuss a potential return.
Management at Ibrox has indicated that a "rigorous and thoughtful recruitment process" is currently underway. While other candidates will be considered, if Gerrard expresses interest in a second term at Ibrox, he may be the leading contender for the position.
At 45, Gerrard has recently mentioned his desire for "unfinished business" in management and has begun reaching out to potential candidates for his coaching staff.
In a podcast interview with Rio Ferdinand, recorded prior to Martin's departure, Gerrard stated his ambition to lead a team capable of competing for titles, suggesting that such an environment would be more suitable for him. He emphasized, "If the right opportunity arises, with the right club and challenge, I will embrace it because it's part of who I am."
Gerrard's Initial Tenure at Rangers
Gerrard began his managerial career in the summer of 2018 after serving as a youth development coach at Liverpool. During his three full seasons at Ibrox, he secured one significant trophy, leading Rangers to their first top-flight title in a decade and denying Celtic an unprecedented tenth consecutive championship. This achievement was marked by an unbeaten run, with Rangers winning all home matches, scoring 92 goals, and conceding only 13, although it was overshadowed by the challenges posed by COVID-19 and empty stadiums. This remains Rangers' only title win since the 2010-11 season.
Gerrard's Record in Old Firm Matches
In contrast to Martin's difficult tenure, Gerrard started strongly at Rangers, remaining unbeaten in his first 12 matches against Celtic. In his debut season, the teams split the derby honors, each winning two home games, marking Rangers' first victory over Celtic since 2012. Gerrard's side then achieved a historic win at Celtic Park in the subsequent season, and he maintained an unbeaten record in derbies thereafter, winning five and drawing one. Under his leadership, Rangers also advanced through four qualifying rounds to reach the Europa League group stage in his first season and progressed to the knockout stages in subsequent years.
Reasons for Gerrard's Departure from Rangers
In November 2021, Aston Villa approached Gerrard, paying £4.5 million in compensation for his services. At the time of his departure, Rangers were four points ahead of Celtic, but their rivals ultimately reclaimed the lead to win the title. The allure of the Premier League was a significant factor, as it represented a logical advancement in his managerial career, especially with a potential return to Liverpool on the horizon. Ross Wilson, then sporting director at Rangers, acknowledged Gerrard's contributions, stating, "Steven and his backroom staff have ensured that the club is undoubtedly in a better place today than it was three-and-a-half years ago."
Gerrard's Tenure at Villa and Al-Ettifaq
Gerrard's time at Aston Villa was brief, lasting less than a year. The team finished 14th in the 2021-22 season, and after a series of inconsistent results, he was dismissed following a 3-0 defeat to Fulham in October 2022, with a record of eight wins and 15 losses in 31 matches that year. He later moved to Saudi Arabia in July 2023 to take charge of Al-Ettifaq. His tenure there lasted 18 months, concluding with the club in 12th place in the Saudi Pro League, just above the relegation zone. Reflecting on his experiences, Gerrard noted, "Overall, I have learned a lot, and it’s been a positive experience personally and for my family, but football is unpredictable, and sometimes things don’t go the way we want."
While his recent challenges may raise concerns about taking over a struggling squad, Gerrard's previous success at Rangers—being the only manager to lift the league trophy since the legendary Walter Smith—may make him an appealing candidate for a board under pressure.
