Stoke City Held to Draw by Preston in Promotion Race
Stoke City lost further ground in their promotion campaign as they were held to a goalless draw by Preston North End, known for their tendency to finish matches level.
This result leaves Mark Robins' side with only two victories in their last nine matches. Once sitting second in the Championship table prior to last month's international break, Stoke now finds themselves in 10th place.
Preston remains in the play-off positions, currently occupying fifth place, but they have drawn 10 league matches this season—more than any other team in the division.
Despite the final score, Robins may take some solace in the fact that his team appeared the stronger side, particularly after a lively start from the visitors. Stoke created more significant opportunities throughout the match.
Unfortunately for City, who have managed to score only two goals in their last five games, visiting goalkeeper Daniel Iversen was up to the challenge, making several crucial saves.
Stoke's recent performance has seen a marked decline, with six losses in their past nine outings, leading to frustration among fans at the final whistle after another disappointing home match.
Preston, whose manager Paul Heckingbottom watched from the stands due to a touchline suspension, had the better chances early on. Thierry Small's effort, stemming from a well-executed team move, was expertly saved at close range by Stoke's keeper Viktor Johansson.
Small had another attempt thwarted by Johansson shortly thereafter, marking the visitors' best opportunities of the match.
Stoke's on-loan striker Divin Mubama created a promising chance for himself following a cross from Mohammed Lawal but ultimately hit the side netting from a challenging angle after a promising first touch.
Defender Ashley Philips also came close, sending an effort from the edge of the area that was deflected over the bar by Odeluga Offiah. Preston's only notable chance in the second half came from Jordan Storey, who headed straight at Johansson.
As the match drew to a close, Sorba Thomas nearly broke the deadlock with a curling shot from the left side of the area, but Iversen made an excellent save, tipping the ball around the post to preserve the stalemate.
