Sunderland Considers Move for Leicester's Abdul Fatawu
Sunderland is exploring the feasibility of acquiring Leicester City winger Abdul Fatawu as the newly promoted team aims to continue its spending spree.
The 21-year-old Ghanaian international is regarded as one of the Foxes' most valuable assets, with a reported valuation of approximately £30 million.
The Black Cats have initiated preliminary discussions to formalize their interest, although no formal bid has been submitted yet due to concerns that the transfer may be too costly or challenging to execute.
Sunderland has already invested £141.5 million during the current transfer window, just shy of Nottingham Forest's record £142 million spent in the summer of 2022, which remains the highest for a promoted club.
Recent signings include the £9.5 million acquisition of defender Nordi Mukiele from Paris Saint-Germain, alongside deals for former Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka, winger Simon Adingra from Brighton, and club-record signing Habib Diarra, who was brought in for around £30 million from Strasbourg.
Fatawu joined Leicester from Sporting Lisbon initially on loan and played a pivotal role in their Championship title win in 2024.
He later made a permanent transfer after Leicester activated an option to buy, but unfortunately, he missed the majority of the 2024-25 season due to a serious knee injury.
Now back in the Championship, Leicester has sold goalkeeper Mads Hermansen to West Ham for approximately £20 million, while Wilfred Ndidi has joined Besiktas for £9 million, and Conor Coady has moved to Wrexham for £2 million.
