Tai Sodje: From Manchester City Academy to Buxton's Goal Scoring Star
Imagine the scene: Two talented teenagers from Manchester City team up to deliver a decisive victory against Chelsea's youth team in 2021. One of them, known for his "potent finishing power," scores twice. The other? Cole Palmer.
Tai Sodje, the player who outperformed Palmer that day, is the son of former rugby star Bright Sodje and the nephew of two ex-Nigeria international footballers, Efe and Sam. Clearly, sports run in his family.
Having spent a decade in Manchester City's youth system, Sodje began his senior career with non-league Buxton in England's sixth tier this season, following his release from the Premier League club last summer. In just four months of first-team football, the 22-year-old has netted 14 goals across all competitions, helping Buxton secure an FA Cup second-round tie against League Two's Cheltenham Town this Saturday.
"As long as I'm keeping fit, playing, and scoring, I'm happy with that," Sodje told BBC Sport. "When I first signed for Buxton, I set myself the goal of scoring as much as possible, and achieving that has been a huge confidence boost. I believe in my ability to score regardless of the level, and I aspire to compete at the highest level possible. That drive to score goals motivates me."
A feature profile on Manchester City's website in 2020 described Sodje, who joined the Citizens' academy at age 11 after leaving Sheffield United's youth system, as "a skilful centre-forward who combines vision, craft, guile, and finishing prowess effectively." He topped City's Under-18 scoring chart that season with 19 league goals, outpacing Palmer, who scored 15 in fewer matches. However, a series of injuries hindered Sodje's progression, preventing him from making the leap to the professional ranks like Palmer, who transferred to Chelsea for £40 million within two years of their match against Chelsea's Under-23s.
"You could tell from a young age that he was destined for greatness—his talent was exceptional," said Sodje about Palmer, who is now an England international and finished eighth in this year’s Ballon d'Or voting.
Learning from the Past
Palmer was not the only former City teammate who would later command hefty transfer fees. Fellow striker Liam Delap was sold to Ipswich before joining Palmer at Chelsea, while midfielder Shea Charles was acquired by Southampton for a significant sum. Despite remaining with City's youth teams, Sodje struggled to break into the first team or secure a loan due to unfortunate injuries.
However, he does not harbor envy toward his former teammates' early successes. Instead, he finds inspiration in their achievements. "Seeing others from the same journey succeed reassures me that it can happen for me too. I aspire to reach that high level, but I also understand that I cannot change the past. Dwelling on what could have been won't help me move forward," he shared.
A New Chapter
Sodje approaches his career with pragmatism and positivity. He expresses gratitude for his decade at City, the teammates he had, the coaches he learned from, and the facilities he utilized. Coming from a sporting family, with his father Bright having played professionally in rugby league and his uncles enjoying lengthy football careers, has instilled patience and focus in him as he builds his career.
"My father still gives me advice today. Having played professionally, he understands the discipline and hard work necessary to succeed in any sport at a high level," Sodje remarked.
Buxton has provided him with a fresh start after a trial at League Two Fleetwood Town did not materialize. Although Silverlands Stadium, nestled among a police station, terraced homes, and allotments, lacks the world-class facilities of Manchester City, Sodje is content. "It's different from City, but I'm here to play football. You don’t always need the extra amenities surrounding you. My career truly begins in men's football now; this is my next chapter, a fresh page," he stated.
Despite his extensive experience at City, it was at Buxton that he witnessed what he considers the best goal he has ever seen—a stunning long-range extra-time winner by Connor Kirby in the first round against Chatham Town. "That was outrageous! It topped anything I saw from Erling Haaland at City. To be on this winning streak is more than I could have asked for," Sodje concluded.
