Thiago Shines as Brentford Defeats Everton
Igor Thiago scored a hat-trick, marking a triumphant return to form as Brentford secured a convincing victory over Everton at Hill Dickinson Stadium, moving ahead of them in the Premier League standings.
After a goal drought that lasted six league matches in December, Thiago now boasts 14 goals this season, trailing only Manchester City's Erling Haaland, who has 19.
The match began with Brentford under pressure as Dwight McNeil forced an early save from goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher. James Tarkowski's header from the subsequent corner was cleared off the line by Thiago.
However, Thiago quickly turned the tide in favor of the visitors, scoring the opening goal in the 11th minute. He expertly directed a precise cross from Vitaly Janelt past Everton's goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, marking his first goal in seven matches.
Pickford later thwarted Thiago's attempt for a second goal, while Kelleher showcased his skills with a brilliant reflex save against Thierno Barry's low header, maintaining Brentford's narrow lead at halftime.
As the first half concluded, Everton's players faced boos from the crowd, and their situation worsened shortly after the break when captain Nathan Collins doubled Brentford's lead with a glancing header from Janelt's corner in the 50th minute.
Just a minute later, Thiago scored again, capitalizing on a loose ball after Kevin Schade's run was halted by Jake O'Brien, slotting it past Pickford.
Everton's Beto, who came on as a halftime substitute, managed to score with a header in the 66th minute, but Thiago sealed his hat-trick shortly thereafter, skillfully chipping the ball over Pickford after receiving a long pass from Collins.
Barry added a second goal for Everton late in the match, heading in a cross from Jack Grealish, but Brentford ultimately held on for a rare away victory this season.
With this win, Brentford climbed to seventh place in the league with 30 points from 20 games, while Everton slipped to 13th, just two points behind the Bees.
Thiago's performance not only ended his goal drought but also significantly boosted Brentford's morale as they head into the second half of the season. Manager Keith Andrews will be pleased with his striker's resurgence, especially after the team had only secured six points from their last 27 on the road.
