Tochi Chukwuani Joins Rangers from Sturm Graz
Tochi Chukwuani, a 22-year-old midfielder, has joined Rangers as their first signing of the January transfer window. He arrives from Sturm Graz for an undisclosed fee and has signed a three-and-a-half-year deal.
Chukwuani, who began training with Nordsjaelland’s first team at the age of 14, was touted as a future star. He made his senior debut at 16 and, just ten months later, became the youngest league scorer in the club’s history.
In 2022, he transferred to Lyngby after a potential move to Serie A side Hellas Verona fell through due to a medical examination revealing a small heart defect. During his two-year stint at Lyngby, he made 58 appearances and scored five goals.
In the summer of 2024, Chukwuani signed a four-year contract with Sturm Graz, marking his first move abroad. His debut season was impressive, featuring in 27 matches and scoring three goals, contributing to the club's title victory while also experiencing Champions League football for the first time.
This season, he faced both Rangers and Celtic in the Europa League, helping Graz secure a 2-1 victory over Rangers in Austria, before receiving a red card for a late challenge on Celtic captain Callum McGregor in a subsequent 2-1 defeat in Glasgow.
Chukwuani 'Can't Wait for Ibrox Roar'
Chukwuani, known for his tough tackling and pace, primarily plays as a central defensive midfielder but has also been utilized on the left side. His addition comes at a crucial time following Connor Barron's injury.
Manager Danny Rohl expressed confidence in Chukwuani's abilities, stating, "He is a player who strengthens our group and offers specific qualities that we believe will enhance our midfield department. With experience in European competitions and winning titles, along with his technical and physical attributes, he understands what it takes to succeed at a club like Rangers."
On the international stage, Chukwuani has represented Denmark at all youth levels and has been playing for the Under-21 team since 2023, scoring two goals in 20 appearances.
Having previously played alongside Rangers teammates Mohamed Diomande and Oliver Antman at Nordsjaelland, Chukwuani could make his debut at home against Annan Athletic in the Scottish Cup on Friday. "I’m super excited," he said in a club interview. "Rangers are a huge club, and I can’t wait to hear the roar at Ibrox. It’s a historic club with a massive fanbase. There are great expectations, and as a footballer, you want to perform in front of such a crowd. It motivates me every weekend to give 100% and bring joy to the fans."
