Tottenham Focuses on Defensive Strength in Champions League Opener
Last season, Tottenham's strategy revolved around outscoring their opponents, but this year the emphasis has shifted to strengthening their defense.
In their Champions League opener on Tuesday, Spurs secured a 1-0 victory against Villarreal, marking their fourth clean sheet in five matches this season under the management of Thomas Frank.
This is a significant improvement compared to the previous season, where the team managed only one clean sheet at the same point, while under the more offensively-oriented Ange Postecoglou.
“We have emphasized a 'clean sheet mentality' this year because we conceded too many goals last season,” said Tottenham midfielder Lucas Bergvall in an interview with Amazon Prime. “Villarreal didn’t have a shot on target, so we performed very well.”
Defender Micky van de Ven commented, “I believe we are a challenging team to face. Our structure is solid, and we all understand our roles, making us difficult to beat.”
The tactical approach of Frank’s Tottenham against Villarreal starkly contrasted with the free-flowing football seen under Postecoglou. The team adopted a more cautious style, even after taking the lead in the fourth minute due to a blunder by Villarreal goalkeeper Luiz Junior.
Despite Villarreal registering ten shots during the match, goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario was not forced into making a single save, thanks to the excellent defensive work, particularly from Van de Ven.
However, Tottenham’s own offensive output was limited, managing only one shot on target, resulting in a subdued atmosphere for the home fans.
“We defended exceptionally well and limited our opponent's chances against a strong Villarreal side,” Frank remarked. “Offensively, we didn’t reach our best level. There were moments in the second half when we chose to let Villarreal have the ball, and then we would sprint back, which was a fun tactic. Overall, it was a very balanced match that we narrowly won.”
Tottenham has conceded just one goal this season, a 1-0 defeat to Bournemouth, representing a notable improvement from the previous campaign when they allowed five goals in their first five matches. In the Premier League, they have already recorded three clean sheets, just two shy of matching their total from last season.
However, this newfound defensive solidity may be impacting their attacking prowess, as their single shot on target against Villarreal marked the second instance in three games where they struggled to create chances. Frank acknowledges that this is an area requiring improvement.
“We have established a solid foundation in terms of our defensive organization, which is commendable, and we conceded very little,” he stated. “This is the Champions League against a good team. I also recognized our offensive play improved against West Ham, but we need to enhance our attacking efforts.”
