Trent Alexander-Arnold Faces Challenges After England Exclusion and Struggles at Real Madrid
Trent Alexander-Arnold is facing significant challenges after being left out of the England squad by coach Thomas Tuchel for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Serbia.
The 26-year-old's anticipated transition from Liverpool to Real Madrid has not gone as planned, as he found himself on the substitutes' bench during the recent win against Oviedo, following an early substitution in his La Liga debut against Osasuna.
With his exclusion from the latest England team, Alexander-Arnold's chances of participating in next summer's World Cup appear to be dwindling, especially given Tuchel's evident lack of confidence in the full-back.
Despite Tuchel's positive remarks, he has previously expressed doubts about Alexander-Arnold's defensive capabilities, even opting to select his former Liverpool teammate Curtis Jones, an established midfielder, over him for the World Cup qualifier against Andorra in June.
In that match, Alexander-Arnold made a brief 26-minute appearance as a substitute and did not feature at all in the subsequent friendly loss to Senegal at the City Ground in Nottingham.
If he was uncertain about his standing in Tuchel's plans before, the recent developments have made it abundantly clear that he needs to improve.
When addressing the omissions of Alexander-Arnold and Jack Grealish, who has been performing well on loan at Everton, Tuchel stated, "We decided on a tighter, more competitive squad. We didn't utilize all 23 players. There is no doubt that I am a big fan of Trent and Jack Grealish. Big players and big personalities are always in contention. However, in this camp, we chose Reece James and Tino Livramento for Trent's position, and Marcus Rashford and Eberechi Eze for Jack's position."
Tuchel had previously raised concerns about Alexander-Arnold's defensive skills, emphasizing that he must take this aspect of his game "very, very seriously." He noted, "I can see that sometimes he relies heavily on his offensive contributions and does not emphasize defensive discipline and effort as much. If he wants to have a significant impact on the English national team, he must prioritize the defensive part of his game. In qualifying and tournament football, one defensive error can be decisive and lead to elimination."
This frank critique of Alexander-Arnold's performance has now escalated with his complete exclusion from the squad, adding to a challenging period for the defender, who joined Real Madrid on a free transfer from Liverpool.
Tuchel appears confident in his right-back options, with Chelsea captain Reece James, Tottenham's Djed Spence, and Newcastle's Livramento available to fill the role.
Alexander-Arnold's recent experiences have been less than ideal, as he struggles to establish himself at Real Madrid while competing with club legend Dani Carvajal, who has returned to fitness sooner than expected after a serious knee injury.
The 33-year-old Carvajal, a key figure in Real Madrid's success, views Alexander-Arnold's arrival as a challenge he is eager to embrace, making it even more difficult for the Englishman to secure a starting position.
Spanish football expert Guillem Balague remarked on BBC Radio 5 Live's Euro Leagues podcast that there are already questions being raised about Alexander-Arnold in Spain. He stated, "The Spanish media has developed a narrative around Trent, suggesting he is too shy and doesn’t fit in, and that Carvajal will surpass him. I hope he is aware of this and can read the Spanish media. He faces a significant challenge. While we know he can contribute offensively, he must adapt to Xabi Alonso's style of play consistently. Carvajal has the advantage of understanding the system immediately, while Trent needs to learn it. Despite being 33, Carvajal is a fierce competitor and will be hard to displace from the lineup."
Although Alexander-Arnold made a promising start at Real Madrid by impressing fans with his fluent Spanish during his unveiling, subsequent events, including Tuchel's decision to drop him, have added to his difficulties.
The challenges he faces are formidable. He may have anticipated competition for a spot on the England team, but the situation at Real Madrid has become unexpectedly complicated.
Given Tuchel's concerns regarding his defensive skills while he was regularly playing for Liverpool, it is unlikely these issues will resolve if he remains on the fringes at Real Madrid.
