Uncertainty Surrounds Alexander Isak's Future at Newcastle United
As the new Premier League season approaches, uncertainty looms over Alexander Isak's future at Newcastle United. The club is set to commence their campaign against Aston Villa on August 16, having made only one signing this summer—Anthony Elanga—and facing the possibility of losing their star striker.
While his teammates are on a pre-season tour in Asia, Isak is training at his former club, Real Sociedad, as he recovers from a minor thigh injury. Should Isak leave, Newcastle will expect a substantial transfer fee for a player who has scored over 20 Premier League goals in each of the last two seasons. However, after rejecting a bid from Liverpool, questions remain about Isak's role if he starts the season at St James' Park.
Newcastle’s Best Striker Since Shearer
Isak joined Newcastle three years ago for £60 million from Real Sociedad, citing his belief in the club's project as a key reason for his move. In his debut season, he scored 10 goals in 27 games, helping Newcastle finish fourth in the Premier League and secure a return to European football.
In the following seasons, Isak scored 21 league goals in 2023-24 and 23 last season, playing a crucial role in Newcastle's qualification for the Champions League and scoring the decisive goal in the League Cup final, ending a 70-year wait for domestic silverware. Since joining, only Erling Haaland and Mohamed Salah have scored more Premier League goals than Isak's 50.
Isak's performance, surpassing his expected goals by 3.3, has placed him among Europe's elite strikers. "Isak is Newcastle's best striker since Alan Shearer," said Matthew Raisbeck of BBC Radio Newcastle. "He was worshipped on Tyneside, but that relationship has been strained."
Summer Turning into a Nightmare
Newcastle's management does not suggest Isak has no future at the club, should a transfer not materialize. The expectation is for the 25-year-old to return to training with his teammates soon. "He is still our player," stated manager Eddie Howe. "He’s contracted to us, and we control what is next for him to some extent."
Supporters, however, might feel differently. Isak's goals have made him a fan favorite, but his desire to leave is frustrating for some. "We’ve just had an amazing season, winning our first trophy in 70 years," said Lee Johnson from the Newcastle podcast True Faith. "This summer was supposed to be transformational, but it’s turning into a nightmare."
Former Newcastle defender Steve Howey added, "He’s at a club that adores him, with great pay and Champions League football. It would take a significant offer to lure him away."
Catastrophic If He Leaves
Isak's goals have contributed 30 points to Newcastle since his arrival, making his potential departure a significant loss. The club has identified potential replacements, including Brentford's Yoane Wissa and RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko. However, Newcastle's movement in the transfer market has been slow, partly due to the absence of a director of football and chief executive, as well as financial constraints.
A substantial transfer fee for Isak, possibly around £150 million, could provide Newcastle with the flexibility to strengthen their squad. "There is an acceptance that Newcastle needs to improve their player sales," admitted Raisbeck. "Losing Isak without a replacement would be catastrophic," said Charlotte Robson from True Faith. "Progressing in the Champions League without a striker would be very difficult."
With Howe in Charge, Anything Is Possible
Retaining Isak would mean keeping one of the world's best strikers. "I think he might start the season at Newcastle, but I don’t think he will play," said a supporter. "If Eddie Howe puts him on the pitch, he would still give his all."
Former Newcastle defender John Anderson added, "He is a top player who scores and creates goals, and terrifies defenders." The saga surrounding Isak’s future continues to impact Newcastle's preparations for the upcoming season.
