Union Saint-Gilloise Celebrates Historic Champions League Debut with Victory Over PSV Eindhoven
Union Saint-Gilloise marked a remarkable debut in the Champions League with a historic victory against PSV Eindhoven.
The Belgian team secured their first Pro League title in 90 years last season, earning them a place in the competition for the first time in the club's history.
They started the match brilliantly, taking the lead in the ninth minute with a penalty awarded after Ricardo Pepi fouled former Portsmouth defender Christian Burgess in the box.
Promise David stepped up to become the club's inaugural Champions League goalscorer, coolly converting the penalty past PSV goalkeeper Matej Kovar.
Union extended their advantage in the 39th minute, quieting the home crowd at Philips Stadion with a fantastic solo effort from Anouar Ait El Hadj. The Belgian midfielder seized a loose ball in midfield, charged into the box, and struck a low shot into the net.
Kevin Mac Allister, brother of Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister, capped off a perfect night for Union with a goal from a corner kick nine minutes before the final whistle.
Although Ruben van Bommel managed to score a consolation goal for the hosts in the 90th minute, it was yet another disappointing home performance for PSV, who suffered a heavy 7-1 defeat to Arsenal in the last 16 of the previous season.
Peter Bosz's side will look to rebound in their league phase campaign when they visit Bayer Leverkusen on October 1, while Newcastle will travel to Union on the same evening.
