VAR Controversy Leads to Referee Change for Liverpool vs. Arsenal Match
Michael Salisbury has been removed from officiating the upcoming Premier League match between Liverpool and Arsenal following an admission of error by Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL). This decision comes after the video assistant referee (VAR) controversially disallowed Fulham's opening goal during their match against Chelsea on Saturday.
Fulham's Josh King scored in the 22nd minute, but the goal was annulled after VAR intervened, citing a foul by Rodrigo Muniz in the build-up. Muniz was found to have stepped on the foot of Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah while attempting to maneuver near the halfway line.
After a protracted review, VAR official Salisbury confirmed the decision, which was subsequently upheld by referee Robert Jones after he consulted the pitchside monitor. Chelsea ultimately secured a 2-0 victory.
Howard Webb, the head of referees, has reached out to Fulham to acknowledge that the ruling was incorrect. He noted that the decision to disallow the goal did not meet the necessary criteria for a VAR intervention, as it was not a clear and obvious error by the on-field referee and should have been considered a 'referee's call.'
Consequently, PGMOL has appointed John Brooks to officiate the Liverpool vs. Arsenal match on Sunday in place of Salisbury.
