Victor Osimhen: Hope for Nigeria in Africa Cup of Nations
Where there is Victor Osimhen for Nigeria, there is hope.
The 27-year-old striker and his Nigerian teammates are set to face the hosts, Morocco, in the semi-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations on Wednesday, having achieved five wins from five matches thus far.
Osimhen is currently tied for second place in the tournament's top scorers list with four goals, alongside Liverpool and Egypt's Mohamed Salah, and just one goal behind Morocco's Brahim Diaz.
However, the tournament has not been without its challenges for Osimhen and the Super Eagles, as a notable on-field dispute has threatened to overshadow their commendable performances.
The disagreement with teammate Ademola Lookman during the 4-0 victory over Mozambique in the Round of 16 garnered significant media attention, with some reports—denied by the Nigerian camp—suggesting that Osimhen had threatened to leave the team.
Osimhen confronted Lookman for not passing the ball to him when he was in a prime scoring position and subsequently signaled to manager Eric Chelle to substitute him, which occurred. Following the match, Osimhen went directly to the locker room instead of joining the on-field celebrations.
Fortunately, the situation has since calmed, with both players, including Osimhen, and Chelle asserting that any internal conflict was resolved promptly after the final whistle.
Those who know him best argue that Osimhen's competitive spirit is integral to his success, dismissing any claims of selfishness as completely unfounded.
With just two goals needed to equal the late Rashidi Yekini's record of 37 goals for Nigeria, Osimhen is on the verge of solidifying his legacy in Nigerian football history.
He remarked, "It doesn’t matter if I equal the record or surpass it. I think Mr. Rashidi Yekini is the best striker the Super Eagles have ever produced. I’m just doing my best. Of course, it’s amazing to be part of the history of the Super Eagles. So I’m just trying to win something important for my country, and I believe with the support of my teammates, I’m on that path."
His Challenging Upbringing
Born in Lagos, Osimhen's early life was marked by hardship. The loss of his parents forced him to sell water in traffic as a child, while he struggled to support himself, his brother, and his sister.
Former Nigerian defender William Troost-Ekong, who once captained Osimhen, discussed how the striker's challenging upbringing has shaped his competitive nature. "He’s had a tough upbringing," Troost-Ekong told BBC World Service. "He had to fend for himself and his siblings after losing his parents at a young age. This has instilled in him a deep hunger and drive. He’s always the first to score and even at dinner, he’s the first at the buffet, eager to get in there. He’s fantastic to have on the team and embodies the spirit we need. He’s a true leader and an inspiration for both our generation and future players."
Perceived Leadership
The legendary Yekini scored 37 goals in 58 matches for Nigeria, while Osimhen currently has 35 goals in 50 appearances. If Osimhen breaks Yekini's record during this Africa Cup of Nations, it could propel Nigeria towards their fourth continental title, especially as they seek redemption after failing to qualify for this summer's World Cup.
Troost-Ekong believes that Osimhen's primary focus is on winning his first Africa Cup of Nations title. "All of us would love to be remembered in history. Yekini is a legend, and I look forward to seeing Victor surpass that, but his respect for Yekini also speaks volumes about his character. I believe he has many more goals ahead of him and will be a role model for the next generation of players."
Nigerian football journalist Oluwashina Okeleji referred to Osimhen as the "new king of Nigerian football," stating, "He has been earmarked for success since his under-17 days. Within the current squad, he is undeniably the biggest star, and when he’s absent, Nigeria tends to struggle. He may not wear the captain's armband, but he is viewed as a leader—everything revolves around him."
A Title-Winning Club Career
Osimhen's career has been characterized by consistent goal-scoring, evident throughout his time at various clubs. He first gained prominence in Europe during the 2019-20 season with Ligue 1 side Lille, where he netted 18 goals in all competitions before securing a record transfer to Napoli.
His career truly flourished in Italy, where he became one of the most feared strikers globally. His 26 goals in the 2022-23 season helped Napoli secure their first Scudetto in 33 years, and he surpassed George Weah as the highest-scoring African in Serie A with a total of 47 goals.
Osimhen's time in Naples concluded in the summer of 2023, as he prepared for a move to the Premier League, but Turkish side Galatasaray successfully signed the formidable striker. Initially on loan, he scored 26 goals in 30 matches, finishing as the league's top scorer while helping Galatasaray achieve a league and cup double.
Now a permanent player for the Turkish champions, Osimhen continues to demonstrate his scoring prowess, having netted six times in 12 games this season and remaining one of football's most formidable forwards.
