Wales Secures Narrow Victory Over Liechtenstein in World Cup Qualifier
Wales secured a narrow victory against Liechtenstein, maintaining their hopes of finishing second in their World Cup qualifying group.
The hosts, ranked 206th in the world and predominantly made up of part-time players, managed to hold Wales to a goalless draw at halftime. Wales forward Nathan Broadhead had a goal disallowed for offside following a lengthy video assistant referee review.
Despite Liechtenstein goalkeeper Benjamin Buchel being kept busy — a common occurrence for the beleaguered national team — Wales struggled to find inspiration throughout the match.
Frustrations mounted when Daniel James' volley struck the post early in the second half. However, an hour into the match, Wales finally capitalized on their possession. A well-coordinated move involving Neco Williams and Daniel James culminated in a close-range goal by Jordan James.
This goal provided a moment of celebration for the 3,000 traveling Welsh fans, who filled three of the four stands at Rheinpark Stadion in Vaduz, in what was otherwise a forgettable night for the team.
Wales must secure a win against North Macedonia in their final group game in Cardiff on Tuesday to finish second behind Group J leaders Belgium, which would guarantee them a home play-off semi-final in March.
Should they fail to win at Cardiff City Stadium, Craig Bellamy's side will still qualify for the play-offs due to their Nations League success, but they would be required to play their semi-final away in a single-leg format.
To defeat North Macedonia, Wales will need to improve across all aspects of their game, particularly as they will be without captain Ethan Ampadu and Jordan James due to suspensions following bookings against Liechtenstein.
