Wayne Rooney Defends England Manager Thomas Tuchel Amid World Cup Qualifiers
England manager Thomas Tuchel should not be evaluated based on what Wayne Rooney describes as "nonsense" World Cup qualifiers.
In the coming days, the Three Lions will host Andorra and travel to Serbia as part of Group K.
Under Tuchel's leadership, England has secured victories against Albania (2-0), Latvia (3-0), and Andorra (1-0) in his first three competitive matches.
Rooney expressed his confidence in Tuchel during his podcast, The Wayne Rooney Show, stating, "I think he’s a top manager. He may have faced some criticism regarding England's performance, but those games are essentially meaningless."
He added, "When you show up, you already know England is going to win. It often involves facing teams that defend with ten players, making it challenging to break them down, regardless of the opponent."
Rooney, who scored 53 goals in 120 appearances for England from 2003 to 2018, remarked, "I used to enjoy playing for England. Watching the team now can be somewhat dull, as the outcome often feels predetermined. The excitement comes during the tournaments."
He reflected on the recent matches, noting, "Games against teams like Andorra can be painful to watch. I empathize with Thomas Tuchel, as he likely desires a competitive match to showcase his skills. It's truly a no-win situation for him."
Tuchel’s contract with England extends until the conclusion of the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Securing two wins in the upcoming week would bring England closer to qualifying with three matches remaining.
Rooney concluded, "For Thomas Tuchel, it’s crucial to see England challenged defensively and tactically against stronger teams. That opportunity will arise, and I believe he will excel as England's manager. Whether they will win the World Cup is uncertain, but he certainly has one chance to prove himself."
