Welsh Clubs Face Off in Carabao Cup Fourth Round
An all-Welsh clash is set for the fourth round of the Carabao Cup, with Wrexham hosting Cardiff City.
Swansea City will face Premier League giants Manchester City at home, with matches scheduled for the week beginning October 27.
This marks the first occasion in the competition's history that three Welsh clubs have reached the fourth round.
Originally known as the League Cup, the tournament has been held since 1960.
In the previous 65 editions of the competition, Wales has only seen more than one team in the last 16 on one occasion, in the 1976-77 season when both Swansea City and Wrexham advanced that far.
Wrexham and Cardiff will meet for the first time in 21 years, their last encounter being an FAW Cup match in 2004.
How They Got There
Swansea was the first Welsh team to reach the fourth round after a dramatic late comeback secured a victory over Premier League side Nottingham Forest last week.
The Swans also defeated Crawley Town and Plymouth Argyle in this year's competition.
Cardiff joined their south Wales rivals in taking down a Premier League opponent on Tuesday, with goals from Joel Colwill and Callum Robinson leading Brian Barry-Murphy's team to a 2-1 win at Burnley.
The Bluebirds, who have lost only one game this season, previously eliminated Swindon Town and Cheltenham Town.
Wrexham advanced to the fourth round for the first time since the 1977-78 season, defeating Reading 2-0 on Tuesday, with Nathan Broadhead scoring both goals at Stok Cae Ras.
Phil Parkinson's squad has also overcome two Championship rivals, Hull City and Preston North End, during their cup run.
How Far Can They Go?
Among Wales' four EFL clubs, Swansea has had the most successful League Cup campaign, lifting the trophy in the 2012-13 season after defeating Bradford City at Wembley.
Swansea has reached the fourth round eight times, Cardiff six times, and Wrexham four times.
Newport County's only appearance in the last 16 was in the 2020-21 season, where they lost to Newcastle United in a penalty shootout.
Wrexham has reached the quarter-finals twice, with their last appearance in 1977-78, while Cardiff's best run came in the 2011-12 season, when Malky Mackay's team narrowly lost to Liverpool in the final on penalties.
If any of the Welsh teams win their upcoming matches in this year's competition, they will be just two rounds away from Wembley, with at least one Welsh club guaranteed a spot in the last eight.
