West Ham Coach Confident Lucas Paqueta Will Stay Amid Transfer Interest
West Ham United head coach Graham Potter anticipates that midfielder Lucas Paqueta will remain with the club following the closure of the transfer window, despite interest from Aston Villa.
Aston Villa engaged in discussions with West Ham regarding a loan deal that includes an obligation to purchase. According to sources speaking to BBC Sport, the initial talks revolved around a total package estimated at approximately £50 million, which encompasses the loan fee before the deal becomes permanent next summer.
The 28-year-old Brazilian started for West Ham in their 3-0 victory against Nottingham Forest on Sunday, where he scored a late penalty. Following his goal, Paqueta celebrated by making a phone gesture with his hand, tossing it over his shoulder, and kissing the West Ham badge in front of the traveling fans.
When asked by BBC Match of the Day whether Paqueta would still be at the club after Monday’s transfer deadline, Potter confidently replied, "Yes." He added, "The speculation surrounding Lucas has persisted for quite some time, and his professionalism is remarkable. He put forth tremendous effort for the team again today, contributing with a goal and helping secure the win."
West Ham captain Jarrod Bowen urged fans to "not believe everything you read online," emphasizing that some doubted Paqueta would participate in the match, yet he showed up and scored.
Additionally, both Tottenham Hotspur and Everton have expressed interest in acquiring Paqueta.
