Wolves to Open Contract Talks with Jorgen Strand Larsen After Rebuffing Newcastle Bids
Wolverhampton Wanderers are set to initiate contract discussions with Jorgen Strand Larsen following the rejection of multiple bids from Newcastle United during the transfer window.
The Magpies had made offers of £50 million and £55 million for the striker, which were both declined. Subsequently, Newcastle opted to sign Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart and Yoane Wissa from Brentford.
Strand Larsen, a Norway international, joined Wolves permanently this summer for £23 million after a successful loan spell from Celta Vigo last year.
Despite the strong interest from Newcastle, Wolves are prepared to offer improved terms to Strand Larsen, who was among the club's key targets.
Last season, he scored 14 goals in 30 league appearances as Wolves finished 16th in the Premier League. This season, he has already netted twice, including a goal in the 3-2 EFL Cup victory over West Ham.
The 25-year-old missed last week's 3-2 Premier League defeat to Everton due to a minor Achilles injury, as Wolves struggled with three consecutive losses in their opening matches.
Wolves' executive chairman, Jeff Shi, confirmed that the club always intended to retain the forward and does not anticipate any departures during the window.
Shi stated, "We never considered selling him in the window. He is a very good boy, very honest, and also very generous. I have no doubts about him. Sometimes, in the market, every player has opportunities in their career, but I believe he will move past this and commit to the team. We had a very good conversation with him. Once he returns from his minor injuries, he will be ready. I’m confident he will score many goals. Jorgen is one of the most important players in the squad. He scored 14 goals last season, and I hope he can reach 20 goals this season. Hopefully, he can improve to become a top striker in both the league and the world."
