Wrexham Addresses Incident Involving James McClean and Cardiff Fans
Wrexham has announced that the incident involving James McClean and a Cardiff City fan has been resolved.
The 36-year-old player expressed feeling "threatened" by some Cardiff supporters prior to the EFL Cup match at Stok Cae Ras on October 28.
In an interview with Talksport, McClean stated, "I’m in my workplace and I feel I should never feel threatened in that workplace... I wasn’t waiting for him to make the first swing. So I did." He described the encounter, noting that four male Cardiff fans in their late 20s to early 30s recognized him and began to verbally provoke him. McClean initially ignored the first insult but responded to the second, confronting the fans about their remarks.
He recounted, "Words were exchanged. One of them, a tall man with glasses, made a hostile move towards me."
Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson confirmed that he spoke with McClean on the night of the incident, stating that the matter is considered closed by the club. "I had a chat with James on the evening and it’s been dealt with," Parkinson said after Wrexham's goalless draw with Portsmouth. "That’s it. No more to say on that tonight."
North Wales Police reported that they have not received any complaints regarding the incident.
McClean was absent from the matchday squad during Wrexham's draw with Portsmouth due to a hip issue. Parkinson explained, "James has had an injection in his hip; he’s been dealing with it for weeks. We needed to address that issue to ensure he is available for the weekend." Wrexham is set to host Charlton Athletic in North Wales on Saturday at 15:00 GMT, marking their final game before the last international break of the year.
