Wrexham Advances to EFL Cup Third Round with Thrilling Victory
Wrexham once again showcased their entertaining style as they triumphed 3-2 over Preston North End, securing a spot in the EFL Cup third round for the first time in 44 years.
This victory at Deepdale also underscored the significant squad overhaul that has occurred in recent months as the team continues to rise in the ranks.
Manager Phil Parkinson completely revamped his starting eleven for the match, providing opportunities for fringe players to demonstrate their capabilities.
With less than a week remaining before the summer transfer window closes, BBC Sport Wales examines the current state of the Wrexham squad following a busy transfer period.
Transfer Activity

Ryan Hardie, Danny Ward, Liberato Cacace, George Thomason, Josh Windass, Lewis O'Brien, Conor Coady, Kieffer Moore, Nathan Broadhead, and Callum Doyle.
Outgoings:

Competition for Places
Despite the significant changes from the lineup fans have seen this season, Wrexham's starting team at Deepdale had a familiar feel. Key players such as Arthur Okonkwo, Dan Scarr, Eoghan O'Connell, Elliot Lee, George Evans, Ryan Barnett, and Jacob Mendy were instrumental in the club's ascent and played from the beginning.
Scarr led the match with the most clearances (12), while Barnett contributed with 10 clearances, three tackles, and an interception, according to WhoScored.com.
Okonkwo made an impressive save against Michael Smith's curling shot, showcasing his potential as a 23-year-old goalkeeper.
Callum Doyle, who made his debut after joining from Manchester City, also made a significant impact during his hour on the pitch, contributing with a key pass, winning fouls, and making clearances, blocks, and crosses.
“I want to give special recognition to Callum Doyle; he was outstanding for us,” Parkinson remarked. “His passing from the back was of real quality, demonstrating his abilities.”
Ashfield Shines
In contrast to Saturday's frustrating draw against Sheffield Wednesday, Wrexham improved significantly in the second half against Preston, especially after conceding a second goal in the 32nd minute.
Prior to the match, 19-year-old Harry Ashfield expressed his desire to play as many games as possible this season, and he did not disappoint, scoring a vital equalizer that boosted his chances for selection in the Championship.
Amidst the influx of new signings, it was refreshing to see Ashfield, an academy product, take the field.
“Harry Ash deserves his place in the squad; he trains with quality every day. He’s a great lad and continues to improve,” Parkinson stated. “He faced Alfie Devine, a highly valued young talent, and I challenged him to ensure the press would talk about him instead of Devine after the match, and he delivered.”
Up front, Sam Smith and Ryan Hardie displayed flashes of brilliance, with Hardie netting his first goal for the club—a stunning equalizer he modestly called “decent,” while Parkinson praised his “top-class” movement.
Hardie commented, “The more we can contribute up front, the better it is for the club’s progress.”
Showcasing Squad Depth
Parkinson made five substitutions in the final half hour, a bold move that paid off as Kieffer Moore scored his third goal in two games.
“The impact from the bench was fantastic; it’s something we’ve discussed with the team,” the manager noted. “Other teams have had better bench performances than us this season, but tonight, the changes gave us the boost we needed.”
Encouragingly, players like Liberato Cacace, George Thomason, Josh Windass, Nathan Broadhead, Andy Cannon, Jay Rodriguez, and Ollie Rathbone are all expected to return from injury soon.
Potential Additions
As the transfer deadline approaches on Monday, Parkinson is keen to further strengthen his squad and may make additional signings before Saturday’s match against Millwall (15:00 BST).
Wales midfielder Jordan James has been heavily linked with a move to Wrexham from French side Rennes, but the club may need to offload players to facilitate this transfer.
Notably, striker Ollie Palmer, who scored two late goals in the first round against Hull City, was not included in Tuesday night’s squad.
Meanwhile, left wing-back Jacob Mendy returned to the lineup after seemingly being on the verge of leaving, suggesting he could remain with Wrexham.
As has been the case in recent years, the final days of the transfer window are expected to be anything but uneventful.
