Wrexham Secures Late Equalizer Against Blackburn Rovers
Max Cleworth scored in the fifth minute of stoppage time, allowing Wrexham to secure a 1-1 draw against Blackburn Rovers and extend their unbeaten streak in the Championship to eight matches.
Andri Gudjohnsen opened the scoring for Blackburn with a header in the 13th minute, marking the first goal Wrexham had conceded in 375 minutes of Championship play.
However, in the dying moments of the match, Cleworth deflected Nathan Broadhead's shot past goalkeeper Aynsley Pears, earning Wrexham a valuable point.
This draw propelled Wrexham to ninth place in the league standings, while Blackburn remains in 18th.
Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson made two changes to the lineup that secured a 2-0 victory over Bristol City, bringing in Lewis O'Brien and Matty James for George Dobson and George Thomason.
Blackburn's head coach, Valerien Ismael, made one adjustment from his team's previous 1-0 loss to Queens Park Rangers, with Adam Forshaw replacing Kristi Montgomery in midfield.
Wrexham started the match with a slight edge but failed to trouble Blackburn's goalkeeper Pears early on. In a familiar pattern this season, Blackburn struck on the counter-attack, stunning the home crowd.
Ryan Alebiosu found space on the right and delivered a floated cross that Gudjohnsen headed into the net, putting Blackburn ahead.
This goal was a setback for Wrexham, who had kept four consecutive clean sheets and had not conceded first in any of their previous seven Championship matches.
Blackburn continued to gain confidence after taking the lead, with Yuki Ohashi missing a chance to extend their advantage.
Wrexham's best opportunity in the first half came when James McClean headed Ryan Longman's deep cross into the side netting, while Cleworth made a crucial block to deny Ryoya Morishita's shot.
Desperate for a breakthrough in the second half, Wrexham was nearly punished when a loose pass from Dan Scarr was intercepted. Ohashi was denied by Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo after a brilliant play by Taylor Gardner-Hickman, and Gudjohnsen missed the rebound from close range.
In an effort to spark an attack, Parkinson substituted Callum Doyle, Josh Windass, and Dobson for Scarr, O'Brien, and Ben Sheaf in the 59th minute.
Kieffer Moore attempted an acrobatic shot that went wide, and George Pratt cleared another effort from the Welsh international as Wrexham ramped up their pressure.
Blackburn nearly doubled their lead in the 70th minute, as a cross from substitute Makhtar Gueye deflected off Cleworth and just wide of Okonkwo's post.
Wrexham finally registered their first shot on target in the 84th minute, but Pears denied Moore's close-range effort, and Cleworth's follow-up hit the crossbar.
Moore then crossed for Broadhead, who missed the target, but Cleworth's crucial touch on Broadhead's last-ditch attempt ensured Wrexham salvaged a point.
Analysis: Resilient Wrexham Denies Blackburn Another Away Victory
Before the match, Wrexham's boss, Parkinson, cautioned his players against underestimating Blackburn, a team known for its clinical play on the road.
After a slow start, Blackburn silenced the home crowd with a well-executed goal from Gudjohnsen, boosting the confidence of Ismael's squad. Despite having only 43% possession in the first half, Blackburn recorded seven shots, two of which were on target, compared to Wrexham's single attempt.
Wrexham improved as the second half progressed, but Blackburn could have extended their lead if they had capitalized on their opportunities. Nevertheless, Wrexham demonstrated remarkable determination to fight until the last moment, securing a point that could prove crucial as they continue their unbeaten run.
Post-Match Reactions
Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson:
“We kept pushing and eventually got our reward. If the goal had come five minutes earlier, I believe we could have gone on to win. In the first half, we were sometimes careless with the ball, allowing a good counter-attacking team to exploit our mistakes. However, we improved in the second half, and it felt like a goal was on the horizon.”
Blackburn Rovers head coach Valerien Ismael:
“I am always proud of my players. We delivered a consistent and strong performance away from home. We should have scored a second goal early on; we had significant chances in both halves, particularly with Yuki [Ohashi]. After that, it became a battle with Wrexham, and it’s always tough to play here. Unfortunately, we conceded a last-minute free-kick, which I believe was a poor decision by the referee. The Wrexham player assured me it wasn’t a foul. It’s frustrating, but we’ll take the point against a strong opponent.”
