Larne Advances to UEFA Conference League Third Round After Penalty Victory
Larne has progressed to the third round of qualifying for the UEFA Conference League, securing a 5-4 victory over Prishtina in a penalty shootout. The first leg ended in a goalless draw, and Gjelbrim Taipi gave Prishtina an early lead in Kosovo.
However, Dan Bent's equalizer pushed the match into extra time, and despite Paul O'Neill receiving a red card, Larne held firm to force penalties. Both Chris Gallagher and Dorde Saletic missed early penalty kicks, but Rohan Ferguson saved Ramiz Bytyqi's shot in sudden death, sealing the win for Larne.
After their second consecutive shootout triumph, Nathan Rooney's team will face the Portuguese side Santa Clara in the third qualifying round, aiming to replicate last year's achievement of reaching the League stage.
Larne initially fell behind under unusual circumstances when Ryan Nolan's pass to Ferguson, deemed not live by Larne, resulted in an indirect free kick for Prishtina. Taipi converted the free kick from the six-yard line, firing into the top corner past a packed defense.
Rooney's side struggled to create significant chances, with Conor McKendry shooting wide from the box's edge. Larne also survived a penalty scare when Ardian Muja went down under Sean Graham's challenge.
Prishtina nearly doubled their lead before halftime when Velmir Veliu dispossessed Nolan and passed to an unmarked Leutrim Kryeziu. Ferguson redeemed himself by saving the shot, and he was fortunate when Muja's corner kick rebounded off the post into his hands.
In the second half, Larne improved and equalized ten minutes after the break through Dan Bent's first club goal. The Gibraltar international capitalized on a weak punch from goalkeeper Ardit Nika to score into an empty net.
The remainder of the match was fiercely contested, with Ferguson again crucial, particularly when substitute Rin Ahmeti skillfully created a chance. Larne faced a setback in extra time when O'Neill was shown a red card for a foul on Diar Halili.
Despite the disadvantage, Larne managed to take the game to penalties. Gallagher's initial penalty was saved, but Aaron Donnelly scored under pressure, and Ferguson saved Bytyqi's penalty to secure Larne's place in the next round.
This victory marks Larne's second successive shootout win, having previously defeated FK Auda on penalties in the opening round. Last season, they also overcame Ballkani in a penalty shootout in the third round, becoming the first Irish Premiership club to reach the league or group stage of European competition.
