Aberdeen Sporting Director Advocates for Change in Scottish Football
Aberdeen's sporting director, Lutz Pfannenstiel, has called on Scottish football to embrace new approaches rather than solely relying on traditional practices, following reactions to his recent involvement in the dugout alongside interim manager Peter Leven.
After the dismissal of Jimmy Thelin earlier this year, it was announced that Pfannenstiel would support Leven during his interim management. However, his presence on the sidelines during the team's last two matches, which resulted in consecutive defeats to Rangers, has drawn mixed reactions from stakeholders within the sport.
“I don’t think anyone should be concerned about where I sit; it doesn’t matter if I’m on the roof of the stadium,” Pfannenstiel told BBC Scotland. “Times are changing, and in many countries, this is quite normal. Scottish football should not be confined to past norms. Why not explore new methods?”
Since joining Aberdeen in late October, Pfannenstiel has emphasized that he is not in the dugout to assume managerial responsibilities. He clarified that Leven, who will lead the team against Raith Rovers in the Scottish Cup on Sunday, is the one making the crucial decisions.
At 52, Pfannenstiel brings a wealth of global football experience, although this is his first role in the UK. “I’ve heard people say, ‘I’ve never seen a sporting director in the changing room’—that’s simply ignorance. In most clubs worldwide, the sporting director engages with the team before, after, or even during matches,” he noted.
“This is standard practice in many football cultures, so I don’t see any issue. It seems that people may not fully understand the role of a sporting director. It’s not just an administrative position; it’s a football role. Being present and sensing the atmosphere within the team is crucial for me, especially as we approach upcoming transfer windows.”
With Aberdeen facing challenges on the pitch, Pfannenstiel will play a vital role in strategizing to improve the team's performance. A significant part of this strategy will involve appointing a new manager, a process he is currently overseeing. Once a new manager is appointed, will Pfannenstiel continue to be seen in the dugout?
“Hopefully not, but I can’t say for sure. It depends on the new manager's preferences; they may want me there or may not care either way. I haven’t made a decision yet,” he explained. “Typically, I prefer to observe from the stands, as I believe it provides a better perspective. However, given the current circumstances, we will determine the best approach once the new manager arrives.”
