Andre Onana Considers Loan Move to Trabzonspor
Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana is contemplating a loan transfer to Turkish club Trabzonspor.
Previously, Onana was linked with another Turkish side, Galatasaray, but they have since opted to sign Ugurcan Cakir.
Cakir, who recently played a key role in Turkey's World Cup qualifying victory over Georgia, joined Galatasaray from Trabzonspor on September 2 in a deal potentially worth €36 million (£31.2 million).
In light of this transfer, Trabzonspor has been exploring alternative options, and club sources believe that Onana could significantly contribute to their squad.
Currently, Onana is on international duty with Cameroon, and the Turkish transfer window remains open until September 12.
The possibility of either Onana or Altay Bayindir leaving Manchester United has been anticipated since the club signed Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp on transfer deadline day.
While officials at Old Trafford have indicated a willingness to maintain a senior squad of four goalkeepers, this stance appears inconsistent with head coach Ruben Amorim's preference for a more streamlined roster, especially in the absence of European competition.
Tom Heaton is currently the fourth senior goalkeeper in Manchester United's lineup.
Onana had concluded last season as United's first-choice goalkeeper, having started in the Europa League final against Tottenham. However, a hamstring injury sustained at the beginning of pre-season training sidelined him from all warm-up matches, resulting in his exclusion from the opening three Premier League fixtures, during which Bayindir was favored.
He did make an appearance in the unexpected EFL Cup defeat to League Two side Grimsby last month, where he was accountable for the Mariners' second goal.
Signed from Inter Milan for £47.2 million in 2023, Onana was brought in by then-manager Erik ten Hag, who had previously worked with him at Ajax. Despite this, Onana has struggled to find his footing, and the decision to replace four-time club player of the year David de Gea with him has faced ongoing scrutiny.
A series of errors led to Onana being benched during the Premier League loss to Newcastle on April 13, although he was recalled for the thrilling 5-4 Europa League quarter-final victory over Lyon shortly thereafter.
