Arsenal to Actively Pursue Signings in January Transfer Window
Arsenal will be "actively looking" for potential signings during the upcoming January transfer window, according to manager Mikel Arteta.
This summer, the Gunners invested approximately £250 million, acquiring eight new players to enhance the quality of their squad. This move aimed to better prepare for a congested fixture schedule and to compete for trophies across multiple competitions.
Last season, Arsenal's campaign was significantly impacted by injuries. They were without defender Gabriel Magalhaes for the latter part of the season and had to utilize midfielder Mikel Merino as a makeshift striker. As a result, the team finished second in the Premier League for the third consecutive season and was eliminated in the semi-finals of the Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain.
This season has also seen the Gunners struggle with injuries. Kai Havertz was lost from the very first match, while captain Martin Odegaard, as well as Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, Noni Madueke, and Max Dowman, have all faced periods on the sidelines.
Currently, after a series of injuries affecting mainly attacking players, it is now the Arsenal defense that is under strain. Arteta was compelled to deploy Declan Rice in an unconventional right-back position during the match against Brighton on Saturday, as Jurrien Timber was injured and Riccardo Calafiori sustained an issue during warm-ups.
Gabriel made his return from injury in the 2-1 victory, but the timelines for the returns of Cristhian Mosquera, Timber, and Calafiori remain uncertain.
Arteta emphasized the importance of being proactive, stating, "We’re going to be really aware of the situation and the timescale of certain players. We have to be actively looking, and whether we can do it or not, that’s a different story. Our job is to always be very prepared because anything can happen."
