Aston Villa's impressive run of nine consecutive wins across all competitions has propelled Unai Emery's team into the title race, closing in on the club record of 11 victories set in 1897.
This remarkable turnaround follows a challenging start to the season, where Villa failed to secure a win in their first five Premier League matches and struggled to find the back of the net for an extended period.
The team is set to face Manchester United on Sunday, followed by matches against Chelsea and league leaders Arsenal—three pivotal games that could significantly impact their title aspirations.
Having not won a major trophy since lifting the League Cup in 1996, Villa currently sits third in both the Premier League and Europa League, raising hopes that their long-standing drought may soon come to an end.
While Emery has refrained from succumbing to external pressure to declare Villa a contender for the title, the statistics speak volumes. Since their sole Premier League defeat to Liverpool in October, Villa has secured six consecutive victories in the league.
Their resilience was on full display during last Sunday’s thrilling 3-2 comeback win over West Ham, which showcased the team's growing confidence and momentum.
"We are not feeling under pressure; we are feeling ambitious and aiming to challenge in Europe and the Premier League," Emery stated post-match. "We must enjoy each match, prepare diligently, and ensure the players feel comfortable. Our focus is now on the upcoming match against Manchester United. Emery has been cautious not to place undue pressure on his players, allowing their impressive form to draw attention. This form contrasts sharply with their dismal start to the season, where they went winless in their first six games, including a loss in the Carabao Cup to Brentford, and failed to score in the league until a 1-1 draw with Sunderland on September 21.
In response to their alarming start, the squad held a meeting to evaluate their performance and strategize on how to regain their form, acknowledging a lingering disappointment from missing out on the Champions League.
Last season, Villa finished sixth, narrowly missing the top five on goal difference after a controversial final-day defeat to Manchester United. Since their draw at the Stadium of Light, they have triumphed in 15 of their last 17 matches, including a notable 1-0 victory over Manchester City and a dramatic 2-1 win against Arsenal this month.
Under Emery's leadership, the squad has evolved, with seven players from his first match—a 3-1 victory against United in November 2022—remaining integral to the team's success. This core group, featuring players like Emi Martinez, Matty Cash, Ezri Konsa, Emi Buendia, and Ollie Watkins, has been pivotal in driving Villa toward a potential Champions League return, with Emery believing they can achieve even greater heights.
"The past year serves as an example and a learning experience for us. While we have performed well and met our objectives, we could aim even higher," he remarked. "This is my third year here, and I am more motivated and demanding than when I first arrived. The last time Villa lifted silverware—defeating Leeds 3-0 in the League Cup—was a significant moment, coinciding with cultural milestones such as Prodigy's 'Firestarter' topping the charts and Wallace and Gromit winning an Oscar. Since then, Villa has endured a lengthy wait, losing two FA Cup finals and one League Cup final.
Emery, a two-time Europa League winner with Sevilla and Villarreal, emphasized from his first day in charge that winning a trophy is the primary goal. The sting of last season's FA Cup semi-final defeat to eventual winners Crystal Palace still lingers, along with a Europa Conference League semi-final loss to Olympiakos and a thrilling Champions League quarter-final exit to Paris St-Germain in April, all indicative of the progress made.
Captain John McGinn expressed the team's determination to prove their worth, stating, "Every time we approach a significant match, we carry the determination to show that the team we have built over the past five or six years deserves more than just quarter-final or semi-final appearances. I can feel that determination this year. Until we achieve that, questions will remain. As captain, I feel that pressure even more, but when we finally succeed, it will be a moment of immense positivity for us all."
