Aston Villa Secures Victory Over Feyenoord in Europa League
John McGinn continued his impressive form as Aston Villa achieved a thrilling victory over Feyenoord in the Europa League, extending their winning streak.
Villa entered their European campaign last week without a win in six matches. However, McGinn's three goals in as many games have propelled them to consecutive wins in the Europa League, alongside their first Premier League victory.
McGinn netted Villa's second goal in Rotterdam after Donyell Malen's run into the area was halted by three Feyenoord defenders, allowing the ball to fall into his path.
Emiliano Buendia opened the scoring in the 61st minute with a well-placed curled finish, capping an end-to-end first half that featured several contentious decisions.
Unai Emery's side felt aggrieved when Anel Ahmedhodzic brought down Ollie Watkins in the 13th minute as he advanced towards goal. The Swedish defender received a yellow card for the challenge, and referee Rade Obrenovic was prompted to review the incident to consider upgrading to a red card. Ultimately, the Slovenian official upheld his initial decision despite Ahmedhodzic seemingly denying Watkins a clear goalscoring opportunity.
Villa also had a narrow escape when Ayase Ueda's first-half header appeared to have crossed the goal line, despite Marco Bizot's attempts to keep it out. The goal was disallowed due to a foul on Matty Cash in the box.
This victory positions Villa third in the Europa League table, and with Unai Emery being a four-time winner of the competition, the team is optimistic about a successful European campaign.
Analysis: Villa Starting to Overcome Early-Season Struggles
Aston Villa returned to De Kuip, the venue of their 1982 European Cup triumph over Bayern Munich, aiming to further dispel their early-season challenges.
Prior to last week's win against Bologna, their lackluster performances had raised concerns. The first half of the match was exciting, with Feyenoord registering 13 shots, five of which were on target.
However, Buendia's goal in the second half drained some energy from the Dutch league leaders, and Villa maintained their composure to secure a mature win.
There are signs that Villa may be returning to the form they exhibited under Emery in recent seasons. Buendia, who had not scored for the club in a year due to a serious knee injury, has now netted two goals in as many matches.
McGinn has also made history by scoring in three consecutive games for the first time in his career. Despite the late withdrawal of Emiliano Martinez due to a calf injury sustained in warm-ups, replacement goalkeeper Bizot excelled, making crucial saves, including a tip over from Luciano Valente, and achieving a second consecutive clean sheet in the Europa League, leading all players with 15 saves this campaign.
While there is still room for improvement, this away victory in Europe marks another positive step forward and will undoubtedly enhance Villa's confidence.
