Aubameyang Shines as Marseille Defeats Newcastle in Champions League
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang showcased his enduring talent as the veteran forward for Marseille scored two quick goals, leading his team to a stunning victory over Newcastle United in the Champions League.
Newcastle's difficulties on the road continued, as they surrendered a lead at the fervent Stade Velodrome. The match began with a promising start for the English side, with Harvey Barnes scoring in the sixth minute with a precise finish from inside the box.
This was preceded by an impressive headed clearance off the line from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, denying Newcastle defender Malick Thiaw.
However, the visitors, who have only secured one win away this season, allowed Marseille to seize control of the match, creating numerous opportunities for Aubameyang.
Despite missing a few chances in the first half, the Gabon international came alive after the break.
Just after the second half began, 17-year-old Darryl Bakola delivered a through-ball into the right channel behind Newcastle's defense. Goalkeeper Nick Pope rushed off his line to intercept, but found himself caught in a precarious position as Aubameyang expertly finished from a tight angle.
Marseille quickly added a second goal just four minutes later when Timothy Weah sprinted past Tino Livramento on the right and set up Aubameyang, who outpaced Fabian Schar to slot the ball in at the near post.
The goal prompted Marseille's manager, Roberto de Zerbi, to celebrate exuberantly along the touchline.
By the final whistle, De Zerbi was celebrating again, as Marseille secured their second Champions League victory of the season, climbing to 19th place in the standings, while Newcastle remained in eighth.
