Blackburn Rovers vs Ipswich Town Match Abandoned Due to Heavy Rain
Blackburn Rovers' Championship match against Ipswich Town was abandoned with just 11 minutes remaining due to heavy rain at Ewood Park.
Todd Cantwell had given Rovers the lead with a second-half penalty, but referee Steve Martin halted the game before officially calling it off.
Jacob Greaves received a red card for Ipswich Town just 10 minutes prior to Cantwell's goal.
The adverse weather conditions had increasingly affected the match, with water visibly disrupting the ball's movement.
Blackburn started strong, forcing Ipswich goalkeeper Alex Palmer into a save within the first 15 minutes. Ryoya Morishta won the ball high up the pitch and advanced before taking a shot, which Palmer managed to hold.
Jaden Philogene, who scored a hat-trick in the previous week’s victory against Sheffield United, posed a significant threat for Ipswich. He cut in from the left and found a chance, but his shot went wide in the 26th minute.
George Hirst tested Blackburn's Balazs Toth with a powerful shot at the near post 10 minutes before half-time, but Toth made a strong save to deny him.
At the other end, a cross from Lewis Miller flashed across the goal, evading all players, before his long throw eventually reached Cantwell, who was unable to keep his volley down to trouble Palmer.
The second half began poorly for Ipswich when Greaves was sent off for fouling Yuki Ohashi as he broke through on goal. Cantwell's subsequent free-kick went over the bar, but the home side sensed a significant opportunity.
As the hour mark approached, Darnell Furlong fouled Cantwell in the penalty area. The former Norwich City midfielder converted the resulting penalty, placing the ball in the bottom right corner to put Rovers ahead.
Substitutes Jack Clarke and former Blackburn striker Sammy Szmodics were introduced for Ipswich and nearly combined immediately, but Clarke's cross from the byline was cleared.
However, with the referee’s decision to take the players off the pitch, the chances of resuming the match dwindled. The continuous rain left Rovers frustrated as they missed the opportunity to secure their first home win of the season.
