Previous Instances of Match Abandonment
During the abandoned match, Blackburn was leading 1-0 against 10-man Ipswich when the referee halted the game in the 80th minute due to the unplayable surface. Todd Cantwell's goal was nullified, and Jacob Greaves received a one-match suspension for his red card.
In 2002, West Bromwich Albion was awarded a 3-0 win against Sheffield United after the latter had three players sent off, resulting in a player shortage that led to the match's abandonment—an unprecedented occurrence in professional English football due to insufficient players.
More recently, in 2023, Luton Town's Premier League match against Bournemouth was abandoned when their captain, Tom Lockyer, collapsed on the pitch in the 59th minute. The match was later rescheduled after discussions among match officials, players, managers from both clubs, and the Premier League.
In another instance, Manchester United's final game of the 2015-16 season against Bournemouth was postponed and rearranged after a dummy bomb was discovered at Old Trafford during a security drill.
