Boubacar Kamara: Aston Villa's Unsung Hero
Boubacar Kamara has emerged as a pivotal player for Aston Villa, quietly establishing himself as one of the top midfielders in the Premier League.
This was particularly evident on Tuesday when Villa suffered a 4-1 defeat against Arsenal in Kamara's absence due to suspension, ending their impressive 11-game winning streak.
Despite the loss, Villa remains in third place, reflecting a remarkable season overall. Kamara's influence on the team is undeniable, and he is anticipated to return for the match against Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
Acquired on a free transfer from Marseille in 2022, the French international has proven to be one of Villa's best signings in recent years.
Known for his low-maintenance and humble demeanor, Kamara has been instrumental in Villa's success and deserves recognition for his contributions.
How Villa Secured Kamara's Signature
In January 2022, under the management of Steven Gerrard, Villa recognized the need for a reliable holding midfielder to stabilize the team and allow players like John McGinn more freedom.
Discussions focused on optimizing the midfield pairing and finding a player who could effectively use the ball and maintain positional discipline. The importance of balanced midfield partnerships was emphasized, akin to the critical roles of center-backs.
Kamara's versatility, having played as a center-back early in his career and capable of dropping into a back three while in midfield, provided insights into his skill set and ability to build play from the back.
Scouts noted his character and bravery, recognizing his capacity to handle the pressure at Marseille, where he debuted at 16 after joining the club at age five.
Despite concerns over his injury history—missing 17 matches in his first season due to knee and ankle issues, followed by an anterior cruciate ligament tear in February 2024—there was confidence in his ability to adapt to the demands of the Premier League.
During a January 2022 match where Marseille defeated Lens 2-0, Villa's scouts evaluated Kamara alongside another target, Cheick Doucoure, who eventually signed with Crystal Palace. They decided against signing a central midfielder during the winter window and prioritized Kamara, whom they had been tracking for over a year.
Although Tottenham's Rodrigo Bentancur was considered, doubts arose about his suitability as the pure holding midfielder Villa required. Gerrard also scouted Ibrahim Sangare, now at Nottingham Forest, but ultimately, Villa secured Kamara's signature, outpacing Atletico Madrid in the race for his services.
After meetings with both clubs, Kamara chose to move to England, influenced by Villa's chief executive Christian Purslow, sporting director Johan Lange, and Gerrard, who traveled to meet him.
Emery Reaping the Rewards
Although Steven Gerrard, who won 13 of his 40 games during his 11-month tenure, is credited with bringing Kamara to the club, it is current manager Unai Emery who is now benefiting from his talents.
Emery highly values Kamara's positional discipline, which aligns perfectly with his structured approach to the game. "Not for us, not for me," Emery stated when asked if Kamara is underrated outside the club. "We extended his contract last summer because we recognize his capacity and potential. He is still young. He had an injury last year that sidelined him for six or seven months, but he has been fantastic since his return, and his progression continues to impress."
Kamara's recovery from a serious knee injury and subsequent signing of a new five-year deal this summer highlight his talent. Without him, Villa managed to win only six of their last 14 games in the 2023-24 season, barely securing a top-four finish, with their win percentage plummeting from 66% to 37% in all competitions.
Kamara, who scored a spectacular winner against Wolves last month, is regarded as a unique player capable of executing the less glamorous aspects of the game at a high technical level. He excels as a quiet creator, with only Morgan Rogers and Matty Cash surpassing his 179 passes into the final third, while he boasts the highest accuracy at 82.1%.
His 672 passes in the league rank second only to Ezri Konsa's 994, and his 31 tackles have come in two fewer games than Cash's team-leading 32. Kamara has also won the most aerial duels (31) and ground duels (69) at Villa. This season, Villa has won 76% of their matches with him on the field, compared to just 44% without him.
McGinn has described Kamara as "one of the best midfielders in Europe," and Douglas Luiz has struggled to match Kamara's level since leaving for Juventus and subsequently being loaned to Nottingham Forest in 2024. Kamara enhances the performance of those around him, executing fundamental tasks with exceptional skill—an often underappreciated quality. In an era where headlines and spectacular performances dominate, Kamara remains a standout player.
