Bristol City Dominates Portsmouth in New Year's Day Clash
Substitute Sinclair Armstrong scored twice as Bristol City overwhelmed Portsmouth, closing in on the Championship play-off spots.
The Robins took an early lead in the match, with Adam Randell striking from outside the penalty area in the 11th minute. Top scorer Anis Mehmeti capitalized on a misplaced pass from Portsmouth goalkeeper Nicolas Schmid to extend the lead shortly after.
Following the half-time break, forward Scott Twine added a third with a first-time volley. Armstrong then sealed the victory with two goals in the second half, marking a celebratory New Year’s Day at Ashton Gate.
This victory marked a return to form for Bristol City after their previous defeat to Millwall, while it ended Portsmouth's four-match unbeaten streak.
John Mousinho's side entered the New Year’s Day fixture buoyed by their dramatic win against Charlton just days prior, but they quickly found themselves under pressure.
Portsmouth struggled to escape their half, and when a cleared free-kick from Twine fell to Randell, he controlled the ball on his chest and unleashed a swerving shot into the top-right corner.
As Portsmouth attempted to regroup, a pass from goalkeeper Schmid was intercepted by Mehmeti, who charged towards goal and scored with a deflected shot.
The second half offered no respite for the visitors, as a cross from Neto Borges found Twine, whose exquisite volley nestled in the back of the net before Schmid could react.
Substitute Sam Bell then seized on another errant pass from Schmid, setting up Armstrong, who managed to get his shot under a retreating Portsmouth defender.
Portsmouth's best opportunity came just before the 70-minute mark when forward Mackenzie Kirk had a free header saved by Max O’Leary from six yards out.
Armstrong, who has struggled for form since joining the Robins in the summer of 2024, was later found in the box with his back to goal. He turned and struck the ball into the roof of the net, capping off a remarkable performance.
