Charlton's Tyreece Campbell Secures Draw Against Birmingham City
Tyreece Campbell came off the bench to score his first goal of the season, helping Charlton Athletic secure a crucial point against Birmingham City.
The 22-year-old found the net with his first touch in the 67th minute, ending a streak of five consecutive Championship defeats for Nathan Jones's team.
Despite leading through captain Christoph Klarer and hitting the woodwork twice via Demarai Gray, Birmingham experienced a frustrating afternoon.
Charlton deserves commendation for their improved performance after a challenging first half at St Andrew's.
Klarer had opened the scoring in the 28th minute, heading home powerfully from an excellent free-kick delivered by Tommy Doyle.
Charlton nearly equalized five minutes later when Isaac Olaofe intercepted a pass from goalkeeper Ryan Allsop and set up Miles Leaburn, who unfortunately failed to convert the opportunity.
The home side, having been warned, saw Charlton equalize just two minutes after Campbell's introduction. Olaofe provided the cross that Allsop could only deflect into the path of Campbell, who finished confidently.
Gray, who had already struck the post in the first half, came close again with a brilliant individual effort that hit the woodwork as Birmingham continued to dominate the match.
Birmingham applied relentless pressure on the visitors' goal with a series of corners and were awarded a promising free-kick in the 90th minute. However, Charlton goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski made a crucial save from Gray's attempt.
Lewis Koumas had a chance to win the match for Birmingham in added time but failed to convert his header, allowing Charlton to hold on for a well-earned point.
'This kid is grafting' - Jones
Charlton Athletic manager Nathan Jones spoke about Campbell on BBC Radio London:
"He's [Tyreece Campbell] a young player in his first year in the Championship, and he does everything we ask of him. Initially a left winger, we've adapted his role to play as a forward and as a No. 10, and due to injuries on the left side, he's also played as a left wing-back.
We've asked him to cover 12 kilometers with significant high-speed running, and he consistently delivers. He's become our main presser, and he works incredibly hard for this football club. As a south-east London lad, I’m genuinely proud of him."
'It wasn't to be' - Davies
Birmingham City manager Chris Davies expressed his disappointment to BBC Radio WM:
"It's frustrating for us because we played well in the first half, scoring a quality set-piece goal and creating several chances. We hit the post and expected to continue in the same vein. However, when you fail to secure a second goal, the game remains open.
We might have shifted into a more defensive mindset too early in the match. They had a brief spell of pressure, which is common in football. We pushed to secure the win towards the end, hitting the bar and creating other opportunities, but it just wasn’t our day.
After two away games this week, there was a sense of fatigue, and we lacked our usual energy as the match progressed. Ultimately, we let a winning position slip away."
