Chelsea Manager Enzo Maresca Defends Rotation Policy Amid Criticism
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has responded to criticism of his rotation policy from former England captain Wayne Rooney.
Rooney suggested that senior players should "question" Maresca's team selections after the manager made seven changes for the 2-2 draw against Qarabag in the Champions League on Wednesday. This marked the fifth consecutive match in which Maresca has altered at least seven players in his starting lineup.
In defense of his approach, Maresca stated that the depth of his squad enables him to rotate players effectively, which is crucial for maintaining fitness throughout a demanding season that began with a victory in the Club World Cup this summer.
"We are in an era where anyone can express their opinions," he commented regarding Rooney's statements. "Since I joined the club, I have believed in rotating players. No one complains when you win, but I understand the discontent when results are not favorable.
"I appreciated rotation as a player. The physicality and intensity of football today differ significantly from the past. It is unrealistic to expect the same players to participate in 65 matches in a single season.
"To view the season as a marathon, particularly when we reach February and March—the final sprint—you must adopt a different perspective. It is a long race."
Maresca also defended his decision to field Jorrel Hato in Baku, despite the young defender being responsible for both Qarabag goals. "When the rotation involves players like Andrey Santos, a Brazil international, Jorrel Hato, a Netherlands international, and Estevao, another Brazil international, it transcends mere rotation," he explained. "These players are talented and young, and it is essential to give them opportunities to learn from their mistakes.
"However, when victories elude us, the focus tends to shift to the issue of rotation."
