Controversy Surrounds Kobbie Mainoo Amid Manchester United's Draw
A T-shirt worn by Kobbie Mainoo's half-brother became a focal point of discussion following the thrilling 4-4 draw between Manchester United and Bournemouth at Old Trafford.
Jordan Mainoo-Hames sported a 'Free Kobbie Mainoo' T-shirt during the match, a gesture that adds complexity to an already sensitive situation.
The future of 20-year-old Mainoo at Manchester United is under intense scrutiny, as head coach Ruben Amorim has yet to grant him a single Premier League start this season.
Amorim has repeatedly defended himself against accusations of underestimating Mainoo and expressing a lack of faith in the club's academy.
Mainoo expressed a desire to transfer to Napoli during the summer, but Manchester United declined to approve the move.
He received a warm welcome from the crowd when he was introduced with just under 30 minutes remaining in Monday's match against Bournemouth, marking his third-longest appearance in the Premier League this season, bringing his total minutes played to 302.
Reports indicate that Napoli remains interested in acquiring the England international, alongside several other clubs.
However, if United were to allow Mainoo to leave for the remainder of the season to enhance his chances of making England's World Cup squad, they would face significantly higher costs to find a replacement, given his relatively low salary.
While Amorim was not questioned about the T-shirt after the match, he did address Mainoo's situation last Friday. He refrained from confirming whether he would approve a January transfer but expressed openness to a discussion with Mainoo.
"I had some conversations with him, especially last year, and with other players, but about that subject, no, I didn't speak with him," Amorim stated. "I would be really pleased if Kobbie comes to talk to me about that. I just want my players to be happy. I understand every individual has their goals, and frustration doesn’t help anybody. I’m not going to disclose what I would say, but I would talk to him. I am completely open, that is clear. I have my ideas, and that is also clear. I will not change if I don’t believe it, but I’m open to speaking with any player. I love that."
Amorim's recent comments have not only affected Mainoo. Prior to the Bournemouth match, he remarked that 18-year-old defender Harry Amass was "struggling in the Championship" with Sheffield Wednesday, despite Amass being named the club's player of the month. Additionally, he mentioned that 18-year-old forward Chido Obi was "not always a starter in the Under-21s."
These remarks have reportedly been poorly received by both player representatives and senior academy staff. Both Amass and Obi took to social media to highlight their achievements before later removing their posts. Amass shared a photo of himself with Sheffield Wednesday's player of the month award for November, accompanied by a smiling emoji, while Obi posted an Instagram story celebrating a goal for the Under-21s against Manchester City in August.
