Doncaster Rovers Defeats Middlesbrough in Carabao Cup
Doncaster Rovers delivered a decisive performance against Championship side Middlesbrough, eliminating them from the Carabao Cup and handing Rob Edwards his first defeat as head coach.
With two early goals in the first half and a pair of late strikes, last season's League Two champions secured a comfortable victory to advance to the second round.
Edwards opted to retain six players from the squad that triumphed over Swansea on the opening day of the season, aiming to maintain that momentum. However, it was Doncaster who showcased greater confidence, despite making an entirely new starting lineup.
The Rovers took just over ten minutes to open the scoring, with veteran forward Billy Sharp providing a precise lay-off for Ben Close, whose shot was deflected into the net.
Host Delano Burgzorg nearly equalized, hitting the post from a tight angle, but midway through the first half, Grant McCann's side doubled their lead. A cross from Jordan Gibson found Tottenham loanee Damola Ajayi, whose effort, slightly deflected off new Boro defender Alfie Jones, was credited as the 19-year-old winger's first senior goal.
Goalkeeper Ian Lawlor made crucial saves to deny Burgzorg and Morgan Whittaker, but a comeback for Middlesbrough never seemed likely. The situation worsened for the Teessiders when Robbie Gotts scored his first goal since joining from Barrow this summer, followed by a fourth goal in injury time from Tom Nixon, sealing Middlesbrough's exit from the competition for the first time in three years.
