England is just one victory away from securing a place in the 2026 World Cup finals, which will be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Following Serbia's 1-0 loss to Albania on Saturday, Thomas Tuchel's England can clinch qualification by defeating Latvia on Tuesday, with two matches remaining in their campaign.
The Three Lions have not missed a major tournament since 2008, when they failed to qualify for the European Championship under Steve McClaren.
Tuchel's team has won all five of their Group K matches so far without conceding a single goal.
England's place at next summer's most-watched sporting event could be confirmed in just a few days.
What Happens if England Fails to Win in Latvia?
If England does not secure a victory in Latvia on Tuesday, they will still need to win against Serbia in November to guarantee qualification.
A draw in Latvia would mean that a tie with Serbia would almost certainly secure their spot, given England's significantly better goal difference compared to second-placed Albania.
England's final group fixture is against Albania on 16 November.
The 12 group runners-up from the European qualifying section will enter the play-offs, which will also include the four highest-ranked group winners from the 2024-25 Nations League that did not finish in the top two of their qualifying groups.
The 16 teams entering the play-offs will be divided into four paths, with four teams in each. The play-off matches will consist of single-leg semi-finals followed by single-leg finals, scheduled for 26 and 31 March 2026.

If England qualifies for next summer's finals in the coming weeks, they will quickly learn who their opponents will be.
The World Cup draw is set for 5 December at the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington DC.
