Fan Groups Call for Ticket Price Freeze in Premier League
Over 100 fan groups have called on Premier League clubs to freeze home ticket prices for the next two seasons.
In the 2024-25 season, 19 out of the 20 clubs in the English top flight increased ticket prices, while 13 clubs also raised prices for the current season. This has prompted 116 supporter organizations to demand an end to further price hikes.
The clubs are being urged to maintain ticket prices for the 2026-27 and 2027-28 seasons, share ticket pricing data and policies with fans, and engage in discussions regarding future pricing strategies.
A letter published on the Football Supporters' Association website states: "Rising prices are making it increasingly difficult for regular fans, particularly younger generations and working-class communities, to attend matches." It also emphasizes the difficulties posed by changing kick-off times to accommodate television broadcasters, stating: "Matchdays have never been harder to plan for, or more expensive to attend."
The letter further urges clubs to "stop the arms race" related to ticketing, arguing that "£3bn transfer windows, soaring agent fees, and record wages will not be funded by increases in ticket prices. We recognize the commercial realities, but that is precisely why we need to halt the increases and collaborate on a more balanced approach."
The document also highlights an existing £30 cap on away tickets as a "landmark agreement," demonstrating that ticket pricing can be effectively managed.
The Chelsea Supporters Trust, one of the signatories of the letter, stated: "After two consecutive years of above-inflation ticket hikes that have significantly impacted supporters, the message is clear: Chelsea must now stop further increases in home ticket prices. By co-signing this statement, we are advocating for a Stamford Bridge that remains accessible, inclusive, and vibrant with the supporters who make Chelsea what it is today and for future generations."
Premier League to Start and Finish Later than Usual
In related news, the Premier League has announced that the 2026-27 season will commence on Saturday, August 22.
The league is set to conclude on Sunday, May 30, 2027, marking the latest start and finish for any season, aside from the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons, which were impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Premier League stated that a "congested global football calendar" and "player welfare" were the reasons behind the adjusted timeframes.
The 2025-26 season began on August 15, and starting the next season one week later will create an 89-day gap from the end of the current campaign, allowing for 33 days following the World Cup final.
Additionally, the Premier League indicated that its schedule will aim to avoid clashes with Uefa club competition dates whenever possible, and during the Christmas and New Year period, no two match rounds will take place within 60 hours.
Next season will also see no international break in October, although the September break will be extended to accommodate four matches for national teams instead of the usual two.
