FIFA Introduces Peace Prize to Honor Global Unity Efforts
FIFA has announced the establishment of the 'Peace Prize', an award designed to honor individuals who have made significant contributions towards peace and unity.
This annual award will be presented to someone who has demonstrated "exceptional and extraordinary actions for peace" and has "united people across the globe".
The inaugural recipient will be recognized by FIFA President Gianni Infantino on Friday, December 5, during the draw for the 2026 World Cup in Washington, D.C.
In a statement, Infantino emphasized the importance of acknowledging those who strive to resolve conflicts and foster unity in an increasingly divided world. He remarked, "In an unsettled and divided world, it is fundamental to recognize the outstanding contributions of individuals working hard to promote peace."
Infantino further noted that football symbolizes peace and that the award aims to honor the significant efforts of individuals who unite people, instilling hope for future generations.
Is Donald Trump a Potential Recipient?
Infantino and U.S. President Donald Trump have shared public appearances multiple times since the U.S. was awarded hosting rights for the 2026 World Cup. "We have a great relationship," Infantino stated. "I’m really fortunate to have a close friendship with President Trump."
Trump was recently overlooked for the Nobel Peace Prize, which went to Venezuela's Maria Corina Machado. A White House official criticized the Nobel committee, claiming they prioritize politics over peace.
FIFA has yet to announce the award recipient, and Infantino declined to confirm whether Trump would be the honoree in December. When questioned at the America Business Forum in Miami, he simply replied, "You will see."
