Hearts Triumph Over Rangers, Extending Premiership Lead
Heart of Midlothian secured a vital victory against Rangers, moving three points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership. This marked a historic moment as Russell Martin became the first Ibrox manager in 47 years to fail to win any of his first five league matches.
Lawrence Shankland's strike in the 21st minute gave Hearts a well-deserved lead at halftime. Despite facing intense pressure from Rangers in the second half, Shankland scored again late in the game, leaving Martin and his team to contend with a chorus of boos from the home crowd.
This victory was significant for Hearts, as it was their first win at Ibrox since August 2014 and their first overall victory against Rangers in 19 encounters.
Martin maintained the same starting lineup that had shown resilience in their recent goalless draw against Celtic. However, Hearts, known for their physical play, quickly dominated the field, pinning Rangers into their own half from the outset.
Former Rangers youth player Craig Halkett missed an early chance, heading over from a free-kick. Shankland also tested goalkeeper Jack Butland before Rangers managed to mount any sort of attack.
Claudio Braga caused some anxiety for the hesitant Rangers defense before setting up Shankland for the opening goal. The home side's defense appeared to expect a handball call as Shankland fired a low shot past Butland into the far corner.
Rangers struggled to respond, with their best opportunity coming from a curling effort by Thelo Aasgaard that hit the crossbar, while striker Bojan Miovski's header was easily caught by debutant goalkeeper Alexander Schwolow.
After halftime adjustments, Rangers appeared rejuvenated. Gassama struck the far post, while Schwolow saved a powerful shot from Oliver Antman. Derek Cornelius had a goal disallowed for a push on the goalkeeper, further frustrating the home side.
Any hopes of a comeback were dashed when Harry Milne was fouled by Mohamed Diomande, leading to a penalty after a lengthy VAR review. Although Shankland's initial penalty was saved by Butland, he capitalized on the rebound, leaving the home fans stunned. It could have been worse for Rangers had Tómas Bent Magnússon not hit the far post in injury time.
Analysis: Rangers' Nightmare Leaves Hearts Dreaming
The pressure on Martin is mounting following yet another disappointing performance. The former Rangers defender had spoken about needing a "reset" after their goalless draw with Celtic and the training efforts during the international break. However, the first half revealed a disjointed team struggling to find cohesion.
Rangers' defeat raises questions about the absence of Nicolas Raskin, who scored for Belgium recently. Martin's choice to bench Cornelius and high-profile striker Youssef Chermiti proved ineffective as their introductions came too late.
Hearts head coach Derek McInnes encouraged his players to enter Ibrox with confidence, a trait they displayed abundantly. McInnes, who has previously led successful campaigns against Rangers, made the right decision by starting Schwolow over Scotland's Zander Clark, fueling hopes that they can challenge the Old Firm this season.
What They Said
Rangers head coach Russell Martin: "Three tough decisions went against us. We definitely had a goal and there was a handball before their first one. There is a lot of anxiety and difficulty managing expectations. Many players are trying to find their footing in a challenging environment. It won't be easy for me to win people's favor, but we'll keep working to make it happen."
Hearts head coach Derek McInnes: "This is an important win for us, providing belief for both new players and those who have struggled here in the past. It’s great to finally put our poor record at Ibrox to rest. Lawrence Shankland delivered an absolute masterclass up front."
