Hibernian Secures Victory Over Aberdeen, Climbing to Third in Premiership
Elie Youan's late goal propelled Hibernian to third place in the Scottish Premiership, as David Gray's team ended their dismal away form and handed struggling Aberdeen another defeat.
Thibault Klidje opened the scoring in the first half after several Aberdeen players halted play, believing Stuart Armstrong had been fouled. Klidje, however, maintained his composure under pressure from Nicky Devlin to slot the ball into the net.
Hibernian missed multiple chances before substitute Youan picked up the ball at the halfway line, skillfully maneuvering past two defenders before finding the back of the net.
Things nearly improved further when Josh Campbell scored from a Martin Boyle cross late in added time, but the goal was ruled offside.
Aberdeen managed to net a scrappy consolation goal through Marko Lazetic, but it was too late to instill any real tension in the match.
Jimmy Thelin's side was left to contemplate a disappointing four-day period in which they conceded eight goals, following their record European defeat to AEK Athens on Thursday.
Analysis: Hibernian Starting to Click with Two Impressive Wins
Klidje received significant praise for his performance against Livingston last weekend, but it was his partnership with Kieron Bowie that particularly stood out in this match.
The duo, contrasting in size, wreaked havoc on a beleaguered Aberdeen defense, which appeared lacking in confidence after conceding six goals in Athens.
Despite their dominance, Hibernian squandered numerous opportunities. Klidje and Bowie should have found the net early in the second half, Campbell hit the post, and Boyle missed a clear chance to score. However, the signs of improvement are promising.
At the other end, goalkeeper Raphael Sallinger made crucial saves, denying Leighton Clarkson from distance and stopping a one-on-one chance against Lazetic.
Conversely, whenever Aberdeen found themselves in promising positions, they seemed unsure of how to capitalize.
Adil Aouchiche wasted a great opportunity early on, and Lazetic missed a one-on-one chance before scoring a goal that resulted from sheer effort rather than finesse.
Jesper Karlsson appeared frustrated with his teammates on several occasions, seemingly tasked with trying to sharpen Aberdeen's attacking edge alone.
The victory against Dundee should have instilled confidence, but the defeat in Athens has shaken the team, reminiscent of last season's 6-0 loss to Celtic at Hampden.
Thelin will need time on the training ground to help his players weather the storm and rebuild their trust in one another.
Aberdeen faces more European matches ahead, alongside a midweek Premiership game, but at least they have the upcoming weekend off.
What’s Next?
Hibernian will host Rangers at Easter Road on Wednesday, while Aberdeen will make the long journey to Kilmarnock, with both matches scheduled to kick off at 19:45 GMT.
