Leicester City Secures Back-to-Back Wins Against Stoke City
Leicester City earned a crucial victory with impressive first-half goals from Stephy Mavididi and Patson Daka, overcoming a resilient Stoke City side to achieve their second consecutive win in the Championship.
The promotion-contending Potters, who could have moved into second place with a win following Middlesbrough's draw with Oxford United, started the match positively but fell behind to Mavididi's powerful strike in the 23rd minute.
Despite Stoke controlling possession and appearing more threatening offensively, Daka added a second goal for the hosts just before halftime with a skillful dinked finish.
A rapid start to the second half saw the Potters quickly pull one back, with Bae Jun-ho scoring from close range shortly after Leicester goalkeeper Asmir Begovic made a remarkable save to deny Million Manhoef.
Leicester looked dangerous on the counterattack, and Daka had a golden opportunity to extend the lead to 3-1 but misfired completely from a well-placed cross by Jordan James.
Begovic was instrumental in securing Leicester's sixth league win of the season, making a spectacular diving save to thwart Jun-ho's fierce volley from the edge of the box.
Begovic had previously expressed confidence in Leicester's promotion prospects, and his performance was pivotal in a gritty win that lifted Leicester to 10th place, just three points behind third-placed Stoke.
Leicester managed only two shots on target throughout the match, with Mavididi's powerful left-footed effort and Daka's deft finish from Abdul Farawu's perfectly timed pass being the highlights.
Jun-ho's goal, which followed a header from Ashley Phillips that redirected Junior Tchamadeu's deep cross, set up a tense finish as Leicester faced sustained pressure, including several set pieces.
The Foxes held firm to secure a valuable victory and will face Southampton away on Tuesday evening, while Stoke aims to bounce back at home against Charlton Athletic.
Leicester City manager Marti Cifuentes commented:
"This win is significant, especially as it marks back-to-back victories. Starting fresh after the international break with three points is a positive step towards building momentum and confidence. I’m pleased for the fans and players, as I recognize their hard work in what was a challenging match. In the last three games, I’ve seen a team that is committed. We must remain humble; the Championship is a tough league, and sometimes you need to grind out results."
Stoke City manager Mark Robins stated:
"We began the match brightly, but we need to evaluate our decision-making. At times, we took shots when we should have passed, and vice versa. These mixed moments are part of the game, and it's essential to learn from them. It’s frustrating to concede goals from mistakes, especially after a strong start. Going into the second half two goals down after conceding right before halftime necessitated a serious discussion. The team responded well and improved their performance."
