Leicester City Triumphs Over Derby County, Easing Pressure on Manager
Leicester City secured a 2-1 victory against Derby County for the second time in three weeks, alleviating the pressure on manager Marti Cifuentes.
The month of December began with Cifuentes overseeing a crucial 3-1 win at Derby, which seemed to save his job at that time. The Foxes ended the month with another significant, albeit less decisive, victory against the Rams.
In a familiar turn of events, Bobby De Cordova-Reid opened the scoring for Leicester with a first-time finish, mirroring his performance at Pride Park. However, Derby quickly responded through Rhian Brewster.
Just before halftime, Jordan James demonstrated strength and composure, restoring Leicester's lead with a precise side-footed finish past Jacob Widell Zetterstrom.
Leicester managed to withstand prolonged second-half pressure from Derby, securing a vital win after suffering back-to-back defeats that had led many Foxes fans to call for Cifuentes' dismissal.
This victory positions Leicester 12th in the second-tier table as they enter 2026, a year marking the 10th anniversary of their remarkable Premier League title win, where they defied 5,000-1 odds to claim English football's top prize.
Although Leicester remains six places away from the playoff spots, they are only four points behind the top six and are part of a competitive group of promotion contenders. Meanwhile, Derby, despite their loss, also remains in the playoff hunt, just two points and two places behind their regional rivals.
Prior to this month, there had been a nearly 12-year gap between league meetings of Leicester and Derby. De Cordova-Reid has thrived in this revived rivalry, scoring two goals against the Rams in just 23 days, contributing to his tally of four goals in six matches.
However, Leicester's lead on Monday was short-lived, as Brewster equalized with a clinical first-time finish after connecting with a low cross from Callum Elder.
Both teams created half chances before James capitalized on a well-placed ball from Luke Thomas, outmuscling Liam Thompson on the edge of the box before calmly placing the ball into the bottom corner.
In the second half, Derby pressed for an equalizer against a Leicester side struggling with injuries, as Hamza Choudhury limped off and Aaron Ramsey lasted only three minutes after being substituted in.
Despite Derby's efforts, the only significant save in the second half came from Zetterstrom, who tipped a misdirected header from Ebou Adams over the bar, preventing an own goal that would have extended Leicester's lead.
