Luca Zidane Switches International Allegiance to Algeria
Luca Zidane, the son of Zinedine Zidane, the renowned playmaker who led France to victory in the World Cup, has officially changed his international allegiance from France to Algeria.
The 27-year-old goalkeeper, born just outside Marseille, has represented France at various youth levels throughout his career.
This decision, which has been sanctioned by FIFA, opens the door for Zidane to potentially follow in his father's footsteps by participating in a World Cup. Algeria is anticipated to secure a spot in the 2026 finals in North America, contingent upon their upcoming qualifier against Somalia next month.
Currently, Zidane plays for Granada, a club in Spain's second tier. He has made two appearances for Real Madrid and has experience in La Liga with Rayo Vallecano. In 2022, he moved down a division to play for Eibar before joining Granada in 2024.
Zidane's eligibility to represent Algeria stems from his father, whose family originates from the Kabylie region of Algeria.
Zinedine Zidane, widely regarded as one of the greatest players in football history, scored twice in France's 1998 World Cup final triumph over Brazil but faced controversy in the 2006 final when he was sent off, leading to Italy's victory in a penalty shootout.
