Manchester United Coach Ruben Amorim Remains Tight-Lipped on Transfer Budget
Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has declined to clarify his comments regarding his transfer budget, suggesting potential tensions within the club.
Typically open during media conferences, Amorim became reticent when asked to elaborate on remarks he made on Christmas Eve concerning his preferred style of play.
"I have the feeling that if we want to play a perfect 3-4-3, it requires significant investment and time," he stated. "I’m beginning to realize that may not be feasible, so I might need to adapt."
Following this, Amorim switched to a four-at-the-back formation for the 1-0 victory against Newcastle on December 26, only to revert to a five-at-the-back setup in a disappointing draw with bottom-placed Wolves four days later.
On December 23, the day before Amorim’s comments, United officials privately acknowledged that their pursuit of Bournemouth's £65 million forward Antoine Semenyo was unlikely to succeed, clarifying that the intention had never been to utilize the 25-year-old as a wing-back.
During a press briefing before his team’s Premier League match against Leeds on Sunday, Amorim was asked about his understanding of the recruitment situation when he joined United from Sporting in November 2024.
"I don’t want to discuss that," he replied. "My focus is solely on the Leeds game."
Amorim later indicated he did not regret his comments prior to the Newcastle match. When pressed again by the same journalist regarding any changes in the transfer budget, he reiterated, "I don’t want to talk about that."
After a brief pause, and as the United media official began to introduce the next question, the Portuguese coach added, "But you are very smart, so..."
No clarification has been provided regarding Amorim's remarks, but it seems implied that the journalist should infer the meaning, which pertains to the ongoing discussions about recruitment.
United has consistently emphasized that any signings in January must align with their long-term strategy.
Following the Newcastle match, Amorim acknowledged that he occasionally disagrees with the club over transfer targets. One notable instance was the decision to sign Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens on transfer deadline day instead of Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez, who was Amorim's preferred choice.
Amorim stressed the importance of listening to the coach's perspective regarding the qualities needed for his team.
This exchange comes at a time when fan confidence in Amorim has waned, particularly after a dismal series of home performances, including a loss to Everton, who played with ten men after just eight minutes, and draws against West Ham and Bournemouth, both of whom are enduring winless streaks.
United currently sits sixth in the league, having missed several opportunities to break into the top four, and holds only a three-point lead over Fulham, positioned 12th.
The club has made it clear that European qualification is their objective for the season, raising significant questions about Amorim’s future should he fail to meet that goal.
United has already recalled midfielder Toby Collyer from his loan at West Brom, although the 22-year-old is still recovering from a calf injury sustained during a draw with Birmingham on November 26.
It was anticipated that the club's hierarchy would approve new signings this month if forward Joshua Zirkzee, substituted at halftime against Wolves, or injured midfielder Kobbie Mainoo secured the loan moves they desire.
However, Amorim stated that neither player, nor anyone else, had expressed a desire to leave the club. "If you look at our squad, it seems impossible for someone to depart," he remarked. "But they need to discuss it with [director of football] Jason [Wilcox]."
In addition to wing-backs, United is reportedly interested in acquiring central midfielders, though their top targets—England's Adam Wharton and Elliot Anderson, as well as Brighton's Carlos Baleba—are not considered realistic options this month.
The club has also been linked with former Wolves captain Ruben Neves, whose future at Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal is uncertain, and former academy player James Garner, who has been impressive since his £15 million transfer to Everton in 2022.
However, on Friday, Amorim, having previously indicated that at least one signing could be expected this month, stated he was not anticipating any new arrivals. "We have no current discussions regarding changes to the squad," he concluded.
