Manchester United Gains Momentum with Victory Over Wolves
Amidst a season of ups and downs, Manchester United made a significant stride forward with a resounding victory over Wolves at Molineux.
The importance of this win, however, remains to be seen.
Just nine days prior, a thrilling victory against Crystal Palace was followed by a disappointing draw against West Ham, currently positioned third from the bottom.
Before this, United enjoyed a three-match winning streak, only to falter with three consecutive matches without a win, culminating in a home defeat to Everton, who were down to ten men after just 15 minutes.
Monday night’s 4-1 victory against a struggling Wolves team marked United's biggest win of the season, matching a four-goal performance they have not achieved in the Premier League since manager Ruben Amorim took charge 13 months ago.
United registered 27 shots during the match, the highest under the Portuguese manager, and have now led in games for longer this season than they did throughout the entire 2024-25 campaign.
Despite the impressive scoreline, Amorim offered a word of caution, noting the challenges faced by Wolves both on and off the pitch.
"This is a specific case," he stated. "We faced a team that is really, really struggling. You can sense it in every situation of the game. This moment for Wolves is really hard, as a team and as a club. We took advantage of that."
Amorim expressed concern that United might miss a crucial opportunity to ascend into the top six and position themselves closer to the teams vying for Champions League qualification.
Wolves' new manager, Rob Edwards, felt his side displayed the desired performance in the final 15 minutes of the first half, which included their first goal in 540 minutes, scored by Jean-Ricner Bellegarde.
This was not the script Amorim had envisioned, especially on a night when Sir Jim Ratcliffe was present, engaged in animated discussions with director of football Jason Wilcox in the director's box.
After addressing his players, Amorim took a moment alone in the visitors' dugout to reflect before the second half commenced.
"We should have finished that half differently," he remarked. "At half-time, they understood we have everything to win the game. If you need to be really distracted, when you look at Everton, that was three points. We could have had two more points against West Ham. Look at the table. Look at the environment. Look at everything. We needed to win the second half. It didn’t matter the result."
Sky Sports analyst Jamie Carragher praised the team's performance but expressed caution, suggesting that a poor result might be just around the corner.
He is not alone in this sentiment. United has kept only one clean sheet in the Premier League this season, against Sunderland at Old Trafford on October 4. Are they on a run of one defeat in nine games or two wins in six?
After failing to capitalize on opportunities to move into second and fifth place, United currently sits sixth. Depending on upcoming results, they could rise to fourth after facing Bournemouth on December 15, or potentially slip back into the bottom half of the table.
Despite taking only two points from their last six matches, Andoni Iraola's team has secured convincing 3-0 victories on their last two visits to Old Trafford.
Uncertainty seems to be the norm at Manchester United these days, including regarding player availability.
Amorim had anticipated that Netherlands international Matthijs de Ligt would return for Monday's match after missing the West Ham game due to a minor injury, but he was mistaken. The manager now cannot guarantee when De Ligt will be fit to play.
United is also in discussions with the national associations of Morocco, Ivory Coast, and Cameroon regarding the availability of Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo before they depart for Africa Cup of Nations duty. "Let’s wait for the middle of the week," Amorim advised.
When asked about the significance of moving into sixth place, he replied, "Nothing. It’s always the same feeling. We should have more points. But that’s in the past; let’s focus on the future."
Mason Mount's Impact
Mason Mount's goal marks his third in the last four games he has started, illustrating his growing influence since transferring from Chelsea for £55 million in 2023, a move that was temporarily hindered by injuries.
This development provides Amorim with options, particularly as main striker Benjamin Sesko is currently sidelined and Mbeumo is expected to leave soon.
"If you compare his past at Chelsea, he possesses great quality," Amorim remarked. "He can defend, he can attack, and his quality when he touches the ball is really good. It’s not a surprise for me. But, of course, we need to take care of him. He’s going to develop further and will be crucial for our club."
