Manchester United Initiates Talks for Caretaker Manager Position
Manchester United has commenced preliminary discussions with former players Darren Fletcher, Michael Carrick, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer regarding the position of caretaker manager until the end of the season.
The talks are currently in the early stages, and it remains unclear who is the frontrunner to temporarily succeed Ruben Amorim, who was dismissed from his role after a challenging 14-month tenure.
Fletcher, a former United midfielder, has been appointed as the interim manager and will oversee the team until a caretaker is confirmed. The club intends to appoint a permanent successor to Amorim during the summer.
Jason Wilcox, the director of football, has engaged in discussions with Fletcher and his former teammates Solskjaer and Carrick about the caretaker role. Additionally, former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy is also believed to be in contention.
Van Nistelrooy had a successful stint, securing three wins and a draw in four matches as caretaker boss in 2024.
Solskjaer had a similar experience when he took charge after the dismissal of Jose Mourinho in 2018, later becoming the full-time manager for three years before leaving in 2021.
Carrick has been without a managerial position since departing Middlesbrough last June.
Other candidates for the permanent role include Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner and former Brighton manager Roberto de Zerbi, who is currently at Marseille.
During a news conference on Tuesday, Glasner addressed the speculation, stating, "I am the manager of Crystal Palace, and it makes no sense for you to ask me any more questions about it."
