Manchester United's Ruben Amorim Embraces Opportunity Without European Distractions
Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim believes his team is better positioned without the distractions of a European campaign this season.
Following a disappointing 15th-place finish in the Premier League and a defeat in the Europa League final to Tottenham, United will miss out on European competition for only the second time since English clubs returned to UEFA tournaments after a five-year ban in 1990.
This absence means they will begin their Carabao Cup campaign a round earlier than usual, with Wednesday’s match against League Two side Grimsby marking their first encounter since 1948.
Despite this, Amorim views the situation positively, emphasizing the benefit of having free midweeks to work with his players as the season unfolds. “We were not prepared to play in Europe and the Premier League,” he stated. “We need time to develop as a team.”
United's last experience in the second round of the Carabao Cup was in 2014, resulting in a humiliating 4-0 defeat to MK Dons, who featured an 18-year-old Dele Alli in their lineup.
Amorim plans to make adjustments to the squad that played in Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Fulham. “We have three games this week and we have quality players, so we need rotation to try to win every game,” he noted.
England internationals Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire, along with midfielder Manuel Ugarte and striker Joshua Zirkzee, have mostly been on the bench this season, with Mainoo and Zirkzee yet to see any playing time.
Goalkeeper Andre Onana is expected to be in contention, alongside young talents Ayden Heaven and Tyler Fredricson. Meanwhile, Noussair Mazraoui is still recovering from an injury that sidelined him during pre-season, and Amorim indicated that the match at Blundell Park may come too soon for the versatile Moroccan defender. “He is near,” Amorim said. “We are just finishing some drills with him to ensure he does not face another setback.”
Striker Rasmus Hojlund is unlikely to participate as discussions continue regarding a loan move to Serie A champions Napoli. Sources suggest this transfer might progress more swiftly than the departures of four remaining members of Amorim’s so-called 'bomb squad': Antony, Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho, and Tyrell Malacia.
Having secured just one point from their opening two Premier League matches, following a loss to Arsenal in the season's first week, Amorim recognizes the importance of the Carabao Cup, as the winners qualify for European competition—a primary goal for the club this season.
A year free from midweek European commitments presents an opportunity for a reset. However, prolonged absence from such competitions could lead to significant financial challenges. “We need time to build a base and then, in the future, to move forward,” Amorim concluded. “We will reach a point where we need to have Europe so that everyone can participate in games.”
