Motherwell Advances to Quarter-Finals of Premier Sports Cup with Fadinger's Extra-Time Goal
Lukas Fadinger emerged as the hero for Motherwell, scoring an extra-time winner against St Johnstone to secure a place in the quarter-finals of the Premier Sports Cup.
The Austrian midfielder found the net from a tight angle in the 108th minute, clinching a hard-fought and well-deserved victory for the top-flight visitors.
Both teams entered the match with strong form, resulting in a tightly contested encounter. Motherwell nearly broke the deadlock as the first half drew to a close when Emmanuel Longelo's goal-bound shot was deflected over the bar by Saints defender Morgan Boyes from just a yard out.
In the opening 45 minutes, Paul McGinn, Stephen O'Donnell, and Elliot Watt came close for Motherwell, who dominated possession, while St Johnstone managed only a few attempts that sailed over the bar.
St Johnstone faced significant pressure during the second half, with goalkeeper Toby Steward making crucial saves to deny both Longelo and Tawanda Maswanhise.
At the other end, Calum Ward made an impressive block against substitute Makenzie Kirk's shot as he advanced on goal, marking the home side's first real opportunity.
Saints had a golden chance to clinch the win in added time of the second half when Kirk passed to Jason Holt, who inexplicably shot wide from 12 yards with the goal at his mercy.
In extra time, Kirk struck an angled shot against the near post, but it was Motherwell who finally broke through, as Fadinger's angled effort was inadvertently assisted into the net by defender Boyes.
